22-year-old woman in Bududa district kills her two children

UGANDA - Bududa-Police in Bududa district are holding a 22-year-old woman for allegedly killing two children.

The suspect only identified as Lydia Wemesa, is a resident of Bukibumbi village, Bukibumbi parish, Bukalasi Sub County in Bududa district. It is believed that the incident happened on 04th January 2023 when all neighbors had gone to work in their gardens.

Isaac Khatiya, the father to the two children recounts he had been with Wemesa earlier but she dashed home briefly and did not return. On reaching home, Khatiya found the children lying in a pool of blood.

He says Wemesa had a persistent mental disorder which has been on and off, adding that she has been stable of late. One of the deceased children was her 5-year-old biological child and the other was a 6-year-old co-wife’s son.

Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson has confirmed the incident saying the suspect will first be subjected to a mental test to prove whether she was mentally disturbed or not before taking her to court.

Taitika added that “It is a common practice for people involved in capital offences to claim or create an impression that they are mentally unstable to foil investigations and to evade prosecution in the courts of law”

The deceased have been taken to Mbale City mortuary for postmoterm
