KAMPALA - The Uganda Aids Commission organized a health symposium for tertiary institutions at Makerere University Business School under the theme, ‘The Fight Against HIV/Aids and stigma, and discrimination in universities.”

It was organized in partnership with the office of the MUBS Guild President Mr. Bruno Kamoga who said as an action government, they will continually sensitize fellow students about how to prevent HIV infection through messages about abstinence, be faithful to each other as partners or use a condom when the need arises. He also appealed to those who are already infected should take their medication (ARVs) on time in order to live longer.

While giving his opening remarks, Prof. Waswa Balunywa Principal MUBS appealed to the students to concentrate on their education and avoid having unprotected to avoid contacting Aids.

The Chairman Uganda Aids Commission Dr. Eddie Mukooyo while addressing the participants appealed to them not to discriminate against people living with HIV.

“HIV/Aids are not only a health issue, it is an economic issue which affects society, that is why we need joint efforts in the fight”, Dr. Mukooyo revealed. Meanwhile, the Uganda Aids Commission Director Partnership Enid Wamani while addressing the student gathering noticed we had 17,000(47 per day) HIV related deaths in 2021, and added that no person should die of a disease we know how to prevent.

Dr. Stephen Watiti shared his testimony on how he contracted Aids with the students at the health symposium and thanked God that though he is HIV positive, he is about to clock 70 years and appealed to all persons living with HIV to take their medication on time. “Ignorance is one of the drivers of HIV/Aids, do not die of ignorance”, Dr. Watiti appealed to students.

Dr. Watiti also unveiled his book, “Conquering HIV and Aids”, that are available at all bookshops in Uganda at 20,000. He also gifted copies to the Principal MUBS and also selected lady student leaders.

The Uganda Aids Commission in partnership with Makerere University Business School symposium was aimed at creating awareness among university students on the prevention of HIV and Aids in a bid to end it by 2030.
