Kiruddu National Referral Hospital rewarded National Drug Authority awards the best hospitals
KAMPALA - This year, the 6th annual Pharmacovigilance stakeholders’ meeting was organized by the National Drug Authority in Kampala with Kiruddu National Referral Hospital rewarded as the top reporting National Referral Hospital. Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital was the top reporting regional referral. Kayunga General Hospital was the top reporting hospital. Kitebi Health Centre III was best health center III.
Lule Falisy a pharmacist of Kiruddu National Referral Hospital who submitted 613 reports from July 2022 to June 2022 was rewarded with 500,000 UGX by the National Drug Authority.
Meanwhile, David Nahamya Secretary of the National Drug Authority advised patients to be vigilant before consuming medicines from pharmacies. “There are those side effects which are known when taking drugs. There are precautions they will tell you, do not take this drug for example on an empty stomach. So, follow the prescriptions,” he said.
Dr. Hellen Byomire Ndagije, Director Product Safety at the National Drug Authority says sensitizing masses about drug harm can only be effective with collective efforts. “There is more and more medicine in our hands, in our houses, everywhere and if medicine gets in the wrong hands it becomes a poison,” she said. “We are looking for ways to collaborate better, to have a holistic approach to reporting and ensuring that medicine cannot harm,” she added. However, health workers across the country have been put to task to ensure that there are safe drugs on the market but also educate the public about the risks and benefits of specific medicines.
Dr. Charles Olaro, Director Chemical services, Ministry of Health says as a ministry they will ensure all drugs which come on the market have been validated by NDA, so that they are of quality, safe, efficacious and always available medicines by the qualified personnel but we do not rule out the possibility of counterfeits sneaking into the market, he added.
Through engaging Health workers at all levels across the whole country, NDA aims at promoting patient’s safety through medication without harm. The National Pharmacovigilance stakeholders meeting is an annual meeting organized by the Directorate of Product Safety to engage stakeholders about the activities of the National Pharmacovigilance Centre and obtain feedback
