Ndejje, Makerere and MUBS help Uganda dominate 2022 East Africa University Games

LUWEERO - Ndejje University retained their position as overall Champion of the 12th Edition of the Eastern Africa University games after successfully hosting the event from 16th -21st December 2022.

Thirty-two universities took part in the games and it was easy for Ndejje to retain their crown that they last won in 2018 during the 11th Edition held in Dodoma, Tanzania.

Ndejje University collected 124 medals. They include 59 gold medals, 39 Silver medals, and 26 bronze medals making them the overall winners.

Makerere University emerged second with 68 medals.

Makerere University Business School came third with 40 medals that included; 15 gold, 6 silver, and 19 Bronze.

Kenyatta University came fourth with 63 medals including 9 gold medals, 21 silver, and 19 bronze.

Ndejje won most medals in swimming where they amassed 42 medals including 26 gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 5 bronze medals.

State Minister for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang was chief guest during the official closing ceremony congratulated Ndejje for hosting a successful event and promised to lobby for more funds from government in order to make Ndejje become a sports hub with modern facilities. “I congratulate all the winners and the participants, but I ask the Universities not to use none students in these games, and if a University is caught I ask let it be banned for one, two or three years while not taking part in the games with a huge fine, don’t fine the tutor or student, but a whole University. The use of non-students in these games, hinder the development of the sport in the country, you cannot get the Cheptegei’s, you can’t get the products for national teams that can represent the country, so avoid non-students in these games”, Hon. Ogwang stated.

In the build up to the games, Ndejje University received a boost of USD 1 million from government. In his speech, Ogwang said that the government is considering increasing its assistance for the University based on the success of the sports facilities at the campus now.

The University however faced challenges in some sports that involved many participants and had to use stadiums like Nandere ground, which was a distance away from the game’s village.

Ndejje University also failed to host athletics events as the track and field competitions were held at Bombo Military Barracks.
