KAMPALA - Godfrey Nyakaana the former Commonwealth champion has stated that Uganda Boxing Federation President Moses Muhangi is not fit to govern the sport because he has never been voted into office. “No one voted him, he gives out money and that is how he became president. He is just enjoying being on planes, buying new cars, but knows nothing about boxing because he doesn’t meet the requirements of being a former boxer, coach and has no background whatsoever in the sport, hence does not deserve to be President,” he revealed.

Nyaakana has advised the Minister of Education and Sports through the National Council of Sports to rectify the poor management of boxing to regain the past glory where Uganda returned with medals from different international competitions.

The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) under President Moses Muhangi amended the constitution which was attended by representatives from forty-seven boxing clubs in an extraordinary general assembly held last year.

Among the amendments in the new constitution include shifting the academic qualifications for UBF executive candidacy from an Ordinary Level certificate to A' level and above or equivalent, being an executive or senior member of a club in good standing for a minimum period of five years consecutively as well as being a member of the outgoing UBF Excom for a minimum of a period of four years consecutively.

To some, it was intended to hold onto power and close out potential candidates in the forthcoming elections by the current executive.

It should be noted that Nyakana brought Muhangi back in 2018 to stand against Kenneth Gimugu for the UBF presidency seat. In light of that, Nyakana said: “It does not matter, that it is I that fronted Muhangi in the first place. I am not about being loyal to someone who has taken the sport to the doldrums. I am for boxing, period.”
