Charles Mbire thanked for revolutionizing the telecommunications sector in Uganda and leading MTN into becoming a listed company

KAMPALA - The chairman of MTN Uganda, Mr Charles Mbire, and the chairman Board of Directors at Vision Group, Mr Patrick Ayota, were among the leaders recognised for transforming their organisations at this year’s Non-Executive Directors (NED) awards.

The League of East African Directors (LEAD) with partners organized the awards to recognize the Non-Executive Directors (NED), commonly referred to as chairpersons of the Board, for the roles they have played in the growth of their respective organizations,

This year’s awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, 29th November 2022 at Sheraton Hotel Kampala where 10 distinguished Ugandans won awards in different categories.

Ayota was the winner in the Mass Communication category. Ayota, who is also the deputy Managing Director of Nation Social Security Fund (NSSF), beat his close contender, Prof Samuel Sejjaaka, to the award.

Kato acknowledged the role Mbire has played in revolutionizing the telecommunications sector in Uganda and leading MTN into becoming a listed company, adding that Mbire deserved the award more than anyone else.

Mbire on his part described MTN Uganda as the Corporate Mulokole of Uganda, having taken a journey of impossible feats to the top through resilience and above-board practices.

Other winners included Mr George Egadu, the Board Chair of MTN Foundation, who won the Life Time Award; Former Finance Minister, Hon. Gerald Sendaula was given the utilities accolade after outshining Hon. Col. Stephen Basaliza as well as former Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Eng. Dr. Badru Kiggundu in this segment. The Board Chairman Centenary Bank, Mr Gustavo Bwotch, won the award in the Financial services category.

Ms Barbara Mulwana excelled in the manufacturing category, beating other nominees like Dr Erick Adriko, Ms Rachel Dumba and Mr James Kahoza. Ms Angella Kiryabwire, the Board Char of Civil Aviation Authority, was recognised in the Public sector category.

Another winner in the NED Awards was Dr Noeline Kaleeba who was nominated alongside Mr Paul Ssenyonjo and Mr. Joram Kahenano in the Not for Profit category.

Eng Proscovia Njuki, the board chair of UEGCL, won in the “Other services” category.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Gertrude Karugaba, the chairperson of NED 2022 Awards, said the winners deserve the accolades for the tireless role they play behind the curtains for the growth of their different companies and organisations.

The event was organised by the League of East African Directors (LEAD) and sponsored by MTN Uganda, Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Stanbic Bank Uganda, Centenary Bank, Uganda Clays Limited, Civil Aviation Authority as well as NCBA bank and Vision Group among other partners.

The League of East African Directors comprises of top corporate leaders such as Stanbic Bank’s CEO Anne Juuko.

Top banking and corporate executives like Sarah Arapta, Mark Muyobo, as well as Sandra Nakibuule Batte EY’s Associate Director were all present at the glamorous annual ceremony.

LEAD’s Director, James Serugo was the Chairman of the NED awards organising committee for this year’s edition.
