UGANDA - In a historic gathering held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, the 14th National Sports Forum witnessed the unveiling of a ground-breaking sports law aimed at reshaping the landscape of sports administration in Uganda. Chaired by the Minister of State in charge of Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, the forum marked a pivotal moment as the nation embarked on a new era of sports governance.

Milestone Legislation: The centerpiece of the forum was the introduction of a comprehensive sports law, a culmination of two years of collaborative efforts, including the government bill tabled by Sports Minister Hon. Peter Ogwang. The law is designed to streamline the administration and management of sports, emphasizing the incorporation, registration, management, and recognition of national sports associations and sports clubs across the country.

Celebrating Excellence: Minister Ogwang took a moment to acknowledge and commend the outstanding achievements of various sports federations. Special recognition was extended to the Uganda Rugby Union for securing the third position in Africa during the African Championships in Harare, Zimbabwe. The Uganda Ludo Federation was lauded for retaining the number one spot in Africa by successfully defending the Africa Ludo Cup.

Global Recognition: The Minister expressed gratitude towards the Uganda Boxing Federation, Uganda Cricket Association, and the Association of University Sports Leadership for their notable performances on the international stage. Uganda's participation in various championships and hosting events like the International Cricket Association's World Cup reflected the nation's commitment to excellence.

Unity in Action: Minister Ogwang highlighted collaborative efforts, such as the partnership between the Federation of Uganda Football Association and two other football bodies in the region through the Pamoja bid. This partnership is set to host the Africa Cup of Nations showcase, showcasing Uganda's commitment to fostering unity and collaboration in sports.

Call for Awareness: Hon. Ogwang urged the National Council of Sports to follow up on the forum's discussions by organizing a special meeting for sports federation heads. The

Stringent Criteria for Recognition: The Minister outlined the prerequisites for sports federations and associations seeking recognition, emphasizing that federations must cover 75 percent of the districts in Uganda for both amateur and professional sports. Associations, particularly in the amateur category, must cover at least 50 percent of the districts to qualify for recognition.

Anti-Corruption Measures: Minister Ogwang directed the National Council of Sports to enforce the directives of parliament, particularly in cases involving corruption allegations against sports heads. This includes the recent incarceration of the Uganda Netball Federation president, showcasing a commitment to maintaining integrity within the sports sector.

Minister Peter Ogwang has set the stage for a transformative period in Ugandan sports, urging all stakeholders to embrace the changes outlined in the new sports law. The forum has a vision of a more organized, inclusive, and internationally competitive sports landscape for Uganda.
