Uganda's Quest for World Table Tennis Championships 2024 Qualification

KAMPALA - Uganda's table tennis team faces a crucial mission in Tunisia at the Africa Senior Championships 2023, taking place from September 11th to 17th. To secure a spot in the World Table Tennis Championships 2024, Uganda must finish either 5th or 6th in the competition after being defeated by Algeria in the quarter-finals.

The team, consisting of Ivy Nekesa as the Team Captain, along with Parvin Nangonzi and Jemimah Nakawala, has already showcased their talent by earning Silver and securing the 2nd position at the Djibouti Regional Senior Championships in March this year, which granted them the opportunity to participate in the Africa Senior Championships.

The path ahead is challenging, but Uganda remains resolute. If they manage to clinch the 5th or 6th position in Tunisia, they will successfully qualify for the prestigious World Table Tennis Championships 2024, an achievement that holds great significance for the team and the nation.

The journey to qualification took the Uganda Ladies Team through Entebbe Airport as they embarked on their route to Tunisia via Istanbul, Turkey. This arduous journey symbolizes their commitment and dedication to representing Uganda on the international stage.

As the team soldiers on, they carry the hopes and dreams of their nation, aiming to secure their place among the world's top table tennis talent at the World Table Tennis Championships 2024. Uganda's table tennis enthusiasts eagerly await the outcome, anticipating a triumphant qualification.

Meanwhile, from September 11th to 17th, the city of Tunis, Tunisia, is the epicenter of table tennis in Africa. The continent's top players have gathered to compete in a high-stakes tournament, vying for coveted spots in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the World Championships. This event follows the African Cup held earlier in Nairobi, Kenya, but the stakes are even higher, as winners in the team and mixed doubles events will secure automatic tickets to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the top four countries in the team event will earn continental places at the 2024 World Team Championships in Busan, South Korea.

While powerhouses like Egypt and Nigeria are perennial favorites among bookmakers, they face formidable competition from rising forces such as Tunisia, Algeria, Madagascar, and several others. Expectations are soaring, with the President of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Khaled El-Salhy, emphasizing the significance of this tournament: "It is a qualification tournament for both the 2024 World Table Tennis Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games." He also noted the emergence of new top players who showcased their quality at the 2023 ITTF-Africa Cup in Kenya and the African Youth Championships in Morocco.

Madagascar and Algeria, in particular, are expected to be formidable challengers in Tunisia. Their professional players, who ply their trade in France, have chosen to represent their native countries in African events this year, achieving remarkable results. This influx of talent adds a new layer of competitiveness to the tournament, putting traditional powerhouses like Egypt, Nigeria, and Tunisia under pressure to secure qualification spots and podium dominance.

Tunisia, having successfully hosted numerous table tennis tournaments in recent years, has firmly established itself as a major hub for the sport. The Rades Sports Complex, the venue for these qualifiers, promises an exciting experience for the participating players and teams. Tunisia's hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifiers was a testament to their ability to organize top-class events. Lotfi Guerfel, President of the Tunisia Table Tennis Federation (TTTF), sees hosting the 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifiers as another opportunity to showcase the country's prowess in hosting such prestigious competitions.

Guerfel noted the manifold benefits Tunisia has gained from hosting these tournaments. It has provided Tunisian players with the chance to compete against internationally well-ranked players, fostering their growth and development within the sport. This event not only promises fierce competition but also highlights the significance of table tennis in Africa and the continent's determination to shine on the global stage, particularly in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
