UPDF Promotes 301 Officers as Bulambuli MP Congratulates Maj Gen David Gonyi

KAMPALA, UGANDA — President and Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), H.E. Gen. (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has promoted 301 General, Senior and Junior Officers in a move aimed at strengthening leadership and enhancing the operational effectiveness of the country's armed forces.

In the same changes, 83 officers who had been serving in acting capacities have been confirmed in their substantive ranks, while the probationary ranks of 89 Second Lieutenants have also been confirmed, elevating them to the rank of Lieutenant.

The promotions and confirmations represent a significant development within the UPDF command structure and are expected to strengthen leadership at various levels of the Force as it continues to execute its constitutional mandate of defending Uganda's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Among the senior General Officers confirmed and promoted in the latest changes is Acting Major General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, who has been confirmed in the rank of Major General.

Other notable promotions include Brigadier General Godwin Karugaba, Brigadier General Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brigadier General Michael Nyarwa, Brigadier General Richard Karemire and Brigadier General David Robert Gonyi, who have all been promoted to the rank of Major General.

The elevation of the officers comes as part of the continued efforts to maintain a professional, disciplined and effective military leadership capable of responding to the country's security and defence responsibilities.

The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, together with the UPDF, congratulated all the officers upon their promotion and confirmation, describing the changes as an important step in strengthening leadership across all levels of the Force.

The newly promoted officers are expected to continue demonstrating professionalism, discipline and commitment to national service as they assume their new responsibilities.

Following the announcement, Hon. Emmanuel Biara Wephukulu, Member of Parliament for Bulambuli County, joined leaders and well-wishers in congratulating Major General David Robert Gonyi upon his promotion from Brigadier General to Major General.

In his congratulatory message, MP Wephukulu described Maj Gen Gonyi as a humble, disciplined and exemplary military officer whose promotion reflects his dedication and commitment to serving Uganda.

"Your promotion is a testament to your dedication, professionalism, and selfless service to our nation," Wephukulu said.

The Bulambuli County legislator further expressed pride in having Maj Gen Gonyi serving in the 12th Parliament, noting that his elevation to the rank of Major General should inspire him to continue contributing to the development and security of the country.

"We are proud to have you serving in the 12th Parliament. May this new rank inspire even greater service to Uganda. Congratulations once again, General," the MP said.

Maj Gen Gonyi's promotion has been welcomed as recognition of his service and contribution to the UPDF and the wider nation. His elevation also adds to the growing number of senior officers entrusted with key responsibilities in Uganda's defence and security establishment.

The latest promotions and confirmations underscore the UPDF's continued emphasis on professional military leadership, career progression and institutional continuity, while ensuring that officers are placed in positions of responsibility commensurate with their experience, competence and service to the country.

As the promoted and confirmed officers take on their new ranks and responsibilities, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the UPDF have called upon them to uphold the values of discipline, professionalism, patriotism and loyalty in the execution of their duties.
