Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi makes a rare public appearance today at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission headquarters
The couple arrived at the NRM offices mid-morning, drawing the attention of both party officials and the media. Hon. Jacqueline, a respected figure in Uganda’s political landscape and former Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League, was warmly received as she submitted her nomination forms.
Speaking briefly to the press, Amama Mbabazi said:
“I am here today in full support of my wife, who is passionate and committed to serving older persons in our region. Her experience speaks for itself, and I believe she is the right voice for this role.”
Jacqueline Mbabazi, known for her advocacy on social welfare and development, expressed confidence in her bid:
“Older persons have contributed greatly to our communities, yet they are often forgotten. I’m standing to be their voice and ensure their needs are addressed at the national level.”
The NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, acknowledged the significance of the moment:
“We are honored to receive Hon. Jacqueline’s nomination, and it’s encouraging to see senior cadres like Amama Mbabazi actively participating in the party’s democratic processes.”
This appearance marks one of the few public engagements by Amama Mbabazi at an NRM event since his departure from the party’s top leadership nearly a decade ago. While he didn’t comment on any personal political ambitions, his presence has sparked renewed speculation about a possible return to the party’s inner circles.
As the 2026 elections draw closer, Jacqueline Mbabazi’s candidacy — backed by one of Uganda’s most influential political figures — sets the stage for an engaging race and raises the profile of older persons’ representation in Parliament.
