NRM National Treasurer Reveals 105 NRM LC1 Chairpersons Unopposed in Busia District Ahead of Local Council Elections

BUSIA – A total of 105 candidates for LC1 Chairperson positions are unopposed in Busia District, according to figures released by the National Resistance Movement (NRM), highlighting what the party describes as a strong showing in the district ahead of the Local Council elections.

The figures indicate that the 105 unopposed LC1 Chairpersons are spread across 20 sub-counties and town councils/divisions in Busia District, an area that is home to NRM National Treasurer and Bukedi Sub-Region Team Leader, Hon. Ambassador Barbara Nekesa Oundo.

The development comes as Uganda prepares for the LC1 Chairperson elections scheduled for July 28, 2026, with political parties and candidates intensifying their mobilisation efforts and urging voters to participate in the grassroots democratic process.

According to the breakdown, Busime Sub-County has the highest number of unopposed LC1 Chairperson candidates, with 16, followed by Masaba with 14 and Buhehe with 12.

Other areas have also registered notable numbers of unopposed candidates. Buteba has seven, while Majanji and Buyanga each have six. Eastern Division, Dabani and Masafu Town Council each have five unopposed candidates.

Lumino, Bulumbi, Busitema and Lumino-Majanji Town Council have four unopposed candidates each, while Western Division and Panamungodi Town Council have three each.

Meanwhile, Lunyo and Masafu have two unopposed candidates each, while Tira Town Council, Sikuda and Masinya have one each.

The figures reflect the NRM's grassroots presence in Busia and come at a time when the party has been conducting nationwide mobilisation ahead of the Local Council elections. The party has repeatedly emphasised the importance of strong leadership at the village level, arguing that LC1 leaders are critical in connecting communities with government programmes and ensuring effective service delivery.

For Hon. Nekesa, who has been leading NRM mobilisation activities across the Bukedi Sub-Region, the development in her home district could provide further momentum to the party's grassroots mobilisation strategy.

The LC1 elections are particularly significant because village chairpersons serve as a key link between citizens and local government structures. They play an important role in community mobilisation, maintaining records, supporting local development initiatives and helping residents access government programmes.

The high number of unopposed candidates in Busia is therefore likely to be viewed by NRM supporters as an indication of the party's organisational strength at the grassroots. However, the party is also expected to continue encouraging its supporters to turn up and participate in the electoral process, particularly in areas where candidates are facing competition.

The NRM has in recent weeks stepped up mobilisation across the country, with senior party leaders visiting different regions to rally supporters ahead of the Local Council elections. In Bukedi, the party leadership has been emphasising unity, voter participation and the importance of electing leaders capable of advancing development programmes at the grassroots.

With 105 LC1 Chairperson candidates unopposed in Busia District, the focus now shifts to ensuring peaceful participation in the remaining contested races and encouraging residents to exercise their democratic right.

The development also places Busia among the districts where the NRM will be closely monitoring its grassroots performance, as the party seeks to consolidate its organisational structures and strengthen its presence from the village level upwards.

For the people of Busia, the July 28 elections will therefore mark an important moment in determining the leadership of their villages and strengthening local governance structures, while for the NRM, the 105 unopposed LC1 Chairperson candidates represent a significant milestone in its grassroots mobilisation efforts in the district.
