NRM National Treasurer Barbara Nekesa Oundo Reveals 121 LC1 Chairperson Candidates Unopposed in Pallisa

PALLISA, UGANDA: A total of 121 LC1 chairperson candidates have been declared unopposed in Pallisa District ahead of the Local Council I chairperson elections scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2026, according to NRM National Treasurer and Bukedi Sub-region Team Leader, Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo.

The development is being viewed by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) leadership in Bukedi as a significant indication of the party's organisational strength and grassroots mobilisation in Pallisa District, where the unopposed candidates are spread across 21 sub-counties and town councils.

According to figures released by the Bukedi Sub-region team, the Pallisa Town Council has the highest number of unopposed LC1 chairperson candidates, with 18, followed by Apopong with 14 and Kamuge Town Council with 11.

Other areas with notable numbers of unopposed candidates include Gogonyo and Kaukura, each with 10 candidates, while Puti Puti has seven and Opwateta has six.

The list further indicates that Akisim, Kibale Town Council and Pallisa Sub-county each have five unopposed candidates. Chelekura, has four, while Agule, Agule Town Council, Kameke, Boliso I and Kasodo each have three.

Meanwhile, Oboliso and Olok have two unopposed candidates each, while Kibale and Kamuge have one candidate each.

The combined total is 121 unopposed candidates.

The announcement comes at a time when political parties and candidates are concluding their mobilisation campaigns for the LC1 elections, with the Electoral Commission urging all candidates, agents and supporters to maintain peace and adhere to the electoral guidelines as campaigns close.

For the NRM, the presence of a large number of unopposed candidates in Pallisa is expected to strengthen the party's grassroots structures and provide continuity in local leadership.

LC1 chairpersons play a key role in linking communities with higher levels of local government and in supporting mobilisation and implementation of government programmes at village level. Hon. Nekesa, who has been leading NRM mobilisation activities across the Bukedi Sub-region, has consistently called on party members and supporters to participate actively in the grassroots electoral process and support NRM flag bearers.

The unopposed candidates will, however, still be subject to the electoral process in accordance with the applicable Electoral Commission procedures, while contested positions will be determined by voters on polling day.

The Pallisa figures add to the growing picture of the NRM's grassroots mobilisation efforts in Bukedi ahead of the July 28 elections. The party leadership has been using the final days of the campaign period to rally supporters to turn up and participate peacefully in the elections.

As Pallisa prepares for polling day, attention now turns to ensuring that voters are adequately informed about the electoral process and that all stakeholders observe peace and the guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission. The 121 unopposed LC1 chairperson candidates therefore represent a notable feature of the electoral landscape in Pallisa District, with the NRM leadership expected to use the development to reinforce its grassroots structures and strengthen community-level leadership across the district.
