NRM’s Leku James Pilli Wins Adjumani West By-Election
According to the official Return Form for Transmission of Results (Form RF) issued by the Electoral Commission, Leku obtained the largest number of valid votes and was declared the elected Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County.
ADJUMANI — National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate James Leku Pilli has won the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election, securing 12,423 votes to defeat his independent challenger, Gasper Draga, who polled 2,559 votes.
According to the official Return Form for Transmission of Results (Form RF) issued by the Electoral Commission, Leku obtained the largest number of valid votes and was declared the elected Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County.
Leku’s 12,423 votes represented about 82.9 per cent of the 14,982 valid votes cast, while Draga received about 17.1 per cent.
The NRM candidate won by a margin of 9,864 votes.
The official results were signed and stamped by Christine Eunice Akao, the Returning Officer for Adjumani Electoral District, at 8:31 p.m. on September 17, 2026, at Adjumani District Council Hall.
The form shows that a total of 15,216 ballot papers were counted, with 14,982 valid votes and 234 rejected ballot papers.
Leku now succeeds the late Gen. Moses Ali, the long-serving Adjumani West Member of Parliament and former First Deputy Prime Minister, whose death on July 18, 2026, created the vacancy. The Electoral Commission subsequently scheduled the by-election for September 17.
The contest had initially attracted several aspirants, but the race was eventually narrowed to Leku and Draga after other candidates withdrew.
Leku had earlier secured the NRM flag in the party primary, defeating six other contenders with 9,336 votes, representing 37.2 per cent, according to results announced by the NRM Electoral Commission.
During his campaign, Leku pledged to pursue development priorities in the constituency and continue projects associated with the late Gen. Moses Ali.
His victory means the NRM retains the Adjumani West parliamentary seat following the death of Gen. Moses Ali.
