Electoral Commission Conducts Second Batch of Repeat LC1 Chairperson Elections in 17 Villages
Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the repeat elections were organised in villages where the Commission could not ascertain the results of the first elections and in areas where complaints challenging the declared results had been lodged.
The Electoral Commission is conducting the second batch of repeat elections for Local Council I (LC1) chairpersons in 17 villages across several districts in Uganda on Monday, October 19, 2026, following concerns over the results of the initial polls held in July.
Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the repeat elections were organised in villages where the Commission could not ascertain the results of the first elections and in areas where complaints challenging the declared results had been lodged.

The affected villages are spread across several districts and urban areas, including Wakiso, Mukono, Buyende, Isingiro, Iganga and Jinja City, among others, according to the Commission.
The exercise is intended to establish the outcomes of the contested elections in accordance with the applicable electoral laws and procedures.
Speaking on behalf of the Commission, Mucunguzi appealed to candidates, voters and other participants to maintain peace and adhere to the guidelines issued by the electoral body throughout the exercise.
“The Commission would like to appeal to all those that are participating in these repeat elections to follow the guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission,” Mucunguzi said.
He also urged Electoral Commission staff conducting the polls to carry out their duties professionally and ensure that the electoral process proceeds peacefully and in accordance with the law.
Mucunguzi cautioned participants against electoral malpractice, particularly voter bribery and intimidation, warning that such conduct undermines the integrity of the electoral process.
He called on all stakeholders to treat one another with respect and refrain from engaging in activities that violate electoral laws.
The Commission emphasised the importance of allowing voters to exercise their democratic rights freely, without coercion, intimidation or undue influence.
The repeat elections form part of the Electoral Commission’s efforts to address unresolved results and complaints arising from the initial LC1 chairperson elections conducted in July.
By returning to the affected villages, the Commission seeks to resolve the outstanding electoral concerns and establish results in accordance with the relevant legal framework.
The Commission has urged residents, candidates and their supporters to cooperate with election officials to ensure that the exercise is conducted in an orderly, peaceful and transparent manner.
The outcome of the repeat polls will determine the LC1 chairpersons in the affected villages, while compliance with electoral guidelines remains central to maintaining public confidence in the local government electoral process.
