KCCA FC Host NEC FC in Lugogo Derby as 2026/27 Uganda Premier League Campaign Continues

KCCA FC and NEC FC renew their rivalry this afternoon when the two Kampala neighbours face off in a highly anticipated Lugogo Derby at the Phillip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, in the 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00pm EAT, with KCCA FC enjoying home-team status despite the two clubs sharing the same stadium as their home ground.

The fixture comes just days after the two sides met in the FUFA Super 8 final, where KCCA FC edged NEC FC 1-0 to claim the pre-season trophy. That result adds another layer of intrigue to today's encounter, with NEC looking for an immediate response while KCCA seek to carry their winning momentum into the league.

The new Premier League season got underway on Friday, and today's Lugogo Derby is the second fixture of the 2026/27 campaign, giving both sides an opportunity to make an early statement.

KCCA Carry Super 8 Confidence

KCCA FC enter the new league campaign with silverware already secured after their narrow victory over NEC in the FUFA Super 8 final at Hamz Stadium.

The Kasasiro Boys will be hoping that success provides the confidence needed to launch a strong league campaign.

Head coach Brian Ssenyondo believes the Super 8 triumph was a valuable boost, but he is conscious that the Premier League presents a much longer challenge.

“Winning the Super 8 was a fantastic boost for our confidence, but league football is a completely different marathon,” Ssenyondo said.

The KCCA coach expects a disciplined performance from his players as they target maximum points in their opening league assignment.

Captain Herbert Achayi has also called upon supporters to turn up in large numbers and provide the team with strong backing throughout the match.

For KCCA, the immediate objective is clear — start the league with three points and build on the momentum generated by their Super 8 triumph.

NEC Seek Immediate Response

NEC FC, meanwhile, begin their title campaign against the very side that denied them their first piece of silverware of the season.

The Diehards enjoyed an encouraging pre-season and reached the FUFA Super 8 final, only to lose narrowly to KCCA. 

Coach Kaddu Badru Mukasa will now expect his players to put that disappointment aside and concentrate on the bigger prize — the Uganda Premier League title.

NEC have strengthened their squad significantly during the off-season as they prepare for their fourth season in the top flight.

The club recruited Uganda Cranes forward Fahad Bayo, midfielders Enrique Lubwama and Enock Tumwesigye, and defender Mustafa Mujuzi.

Young goalkeeper Gilbert Mazige has also been promoted to the senior side, while NEC have worked to retain their key players through long-term contract extensions.

Captain Marvin Kavuma recently extended his stay with the club for another five years, demonstrating NEC's commitment to building a stable squad capable of competing for major honours.

Mukasa Wants Better Finishing

One of the key areas NEC have worked on during their preparations is their efficiency in front of goal.

Mukasa believes his team creates enough opportunities but needs to become more clinical if they are to convert strong performances into victories.

“We've worked on putting away our chances created because we create about 14 shots but have many off target, so this time around we shall take away the chances created because winning and visibility are what makes a champion,” Mukasa said.

The NEC coach will therefore be hoping his attackers can make the most of their opportunities against a KCCA side that will be buoyed by home support.

NEC Missing Bayo and Musa

NEC's preparations have suffered a setback with the absence of new signing Fahad Bayo.

The Uganda Cranes forward will miss today's derby after suffering a muscle strain. He is currently undergoing light training as he continues his recovery.

Defender Ibrahim Musa is also unavailable after suffering a knee injury involving a partial tear of the posterior cruciate ligament. He is undergoing rehabilitation.

The remainder of the NEC squad is fit and available for selection. Bayo's absence will be particularly notable given the attacking threat NEC hoped the experienced forward would provide following his arrival during the off-season.

Recent Record Favors NEC in League Meetings

Although KCCA won the most recent meeting in the FUFA Super 8 final, NEC have enjoyed considerable success against the Kasasiro Boys in recent league encounters.

The Diehards have won four of their last six league meetings with KCCA, losing twice.

Their most recent league encounter ended with NEC recording a convincing 3-1 victory over KCCA on February 13, 2026.

Moment of Silence for King Oyo

The derby will begin on a solemn note as football in Uganda continues to pay tribute to His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away on August 27, 2026.

FUFA communicated that a moment of silence would be observed before football competitions, events and activities organised across the country between August 28 and September 4, 2026, in honour of the late monarch.

Players, technical staff, officials and supporters at the Phillip Omondi Stadium will therefore observe the moment of silence before the Lugogo Derby gets underway.

The match will be officiated by Semere Asadu, who will be assisted by Zziwa Charles and Mugerwa Innocent.

Jjumba Solomon will serve as the fourth official, while Kubingi Margaret is the referee assessor.

Lukooya Baker will serve as technical officer, with Sumaya Kiwanuka appointed general coordinator. 

KCCA vs NEC: A Battle of Ambition

With the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League campaign only getting started, both clubs have plenty to prove.

KCCA FC want to build on their Super 8 success and establish themselves as serious contenders over the long league campaign.
