Vipers Begin Uganda Premier League Title Defence as 2026/27 Season Officially Kicks Off

The 2026/27 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season officially kicks off today, with reigning champions Vipers Sports Club beginning their title defence against neighbours Entebbe UPPC FC at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

The opening fixture presents an intriguing contest between a Vipers side chasing another championship and an UPPC FC team hoping to build on an impressive return to Uganda's top flight last season.

Vipers enter the new campaign as the team to beat after securing their eighth league title, while UPPC finished fifth under head coach Abdallah Mubiru in their first season back in the Premier League.

The two sides meet on Friday evening in what promises to be a demanding opening test for the visitors.

Vipers Seek Winning Start

Vipers will head into the encounter with considerable confidence after beginning their competitive season by winning the FUFA Super Cup.

The Venoms defeated Kitara FC 3-1 last week in a dominant display that provided an early indication of their ambitions under new head coach Denis Lavagne.

Lavagne has spent seven weeks preparing his squad during pre-season and believes the team is now ready for the demands of the new campaign.

“It’s a good time to start the League now, after working for seven weeks. We have found a good dynamic and we won the Super Cup,” Lavagne said.

The French tactician will be hoping his players carry the momentum from the Super Cup victory into the league opener, particularly as Vipers prepare for a busy period that includes domestic and continental football.

Vipers captain Milton Karisa is equally confident about the team's readiness.

“The coaches have prepared us so well, so I believe we’re all ready to start the season with maximum points,” Karisa said.

The champions are expected to rely on the experience and creativity of players including Farouk Miya, Gusto Mulongo and Karim Watambala as they seek to immediately establish their authority.

UPPC Face Toughest Possible Start

For Entebbe UPPC FC, the opening fixture could hardly have presented a tougher challenge.

The club, formerly known as Gaddafi FC, enjoyed a remarkable return to the Premier League last season, finishing fifth under Mubiru.

Mubiru's work transformed UPPC into a competitive side capable of challenging established teams, and the coach will now be tasked with maintaining that level of performance in the new campaign.

However, history strongly favours the hosts.

UPPC have recorded only one victory in their previous head-to-head meetings with Vipers. The Venoms have won six of those encounters, while one match ended in a draw.

Last season's two league meetings also went in favour of the champions.

Vipers secured a narrow 1-0 victory at Bugonga before completing the double with a 2-0 win at Kitende.

UPPC will therefore have to overcome both Vipers' current form and an unfavourable head-to-head record if they are to leave Kitende with a positive result.

Injuries Complicate UPPC's Plans

Mubiru's preparations have been made more difficult by injuries and fitness concerns affecting several key players.

Isa Bugembe and Ambrose Kigozi have fitness concerns after missing large parts of pre-season, while Anwar Ntege, Grant Matsiko, Ahmed Amayo and Julius Poloto are ruled out through injury.

The absence of six players will test the depth of the UPPC squad at the earliest possible stage of the campaign.

The visitors are nevertheless expected to turn to their new signings for inspiration.

Ibrahim Mugulusi, Kokolo and Sharif Ssengendo are among the players expected to take on greater responsibility as UPPC attempt to frustrate the champions and begin their campaign with an encouraging result.

Vipers Carry Continental Ambitions

Today's match is particularly important for Vipers because the Kitende side is preparing for a demanding continental assignment immediately after the league opener.

The champions are scheduled to face Mauritania's Nouadhibou in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League next week.

A positive start against UPPC would therefore give Lavagne's team valuable momentum before turning their attention to continental competition.

Vipers' ambitions extend beyond retaining the domestic championship. Having established themselves as one of Uganda's most successful clubs, the Venoms will also be expected to represent the country strongly on the continental stage.

Vipers will therefore be determined to avoid an early slip against UPPC and immediately signal their intentions to the rest of the division.
