Diehards Eye Express Win, Top Spot Under Lugogo Lights

NEC FC return to StarTimes Uganda Premier League action on Thursday, October 8, 2026, when they host Express FC in a Matchday Five encounter at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

The fixture comes after a nearly three-week international break that provided the NEC FC technical team with valuable time to assess the squad, work on tactical adjustments and prepare for a demanding stretch of domestic fixtures.

The Diehards head into the contest with confidence after ending their pre-break campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over URA FC.

That result extended NEC FC’s unbeaten start to the season and lifted them to second place on the 18-team league table with 10 points from four matches.

With domestic football now resuming, NEC will be looking to maintain their strong start, secure maximum points at home and keep pace with the teams competing at the top of the table.

Cranes duo return to boost NEC

NEC FC will have the services of goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo and forward Richard Basangwa following their involvement with the Uganda Cranes during the international break.

The two players were part of Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, with the Cranes also playing two international friendly matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Their return gives head coach Kaddu Badru Mukasa additional options as NEC seek to continue their unbeaten run.

However, Hakim Wandera will miss the encounter through injury.

The club has indicated that the rest of the squad is fit and available for selection.

Lugogo ready for return of night football

Thursday’s match will also mark an important moment for the MTN Omondi Stadium, with night football returning to Lugogo.

Following approval of the stadium’s floodlights by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the venue has been cleared to host night matches.

The NEC FC versus Express FC clash will therefore become the first floodlit match at the stadium this season.

The return of night football is expected to create a vibrant atmosphere as the Diehards make their first appearance at home under the lights this campaign.

Express seek second league victory

Express FC arrive at Lugogo hoping to secure their second victory of the season and improve their position on the league table.

The Red Eagles went into the international break after a 1-1 draw against Kitara FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

They currently sit 11th with four points from four matches, having recorded one victory, one draw and two defeats.

Express have scored in only two of their four league matches so far. Their goals have come in a 2-0 victory over KCCA FC and the 1-1 draw against Kitara.

The Red Eagles will therefore be seeking greater attacking efficiency when they face a NEC side that has already demonstrated considerable firepower this season.

Former Express players add intrigue

The fixture carries additional significance because several members of the NEC squad have previously played for Express FC.

Richard Basangwa and Muhammed Kagawa are familiar figures to the Red Eagles, while Hakim Wandera is also a former Express player, although he will be unavailable because of injury.

There will also be a reunion on the touchline.

NEC head coach Kaddu Badru Mukasa previously coached Express FC at the beginning of the previous campaign before making the switch to the Diehards.

Mukasa, however, says his attention is now firmly focused on NEC FC and the objectives of his current team.

“Once upon a time I was at Express FC, but now I’m in the Diehard family with different objectives. We are focusing on any opponent that comes against us; we have to ensure we get a good result.”

Evenly balanced head-to-head record

Thursday’s encounter will be the seventh competitive meeting between NEC FC and Express FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The previous six meetings have produced an evenly balanced record, with NEC winning two matches, Express winning two and the other two ending in draws.

Neither side managed to claim bragging rights in last season’s league meetings, with both encounters ending goalless.

The Diehards will now be aiming to change that trend by securing their third victory over the Red Eagles and strengthening their position near the top of the table.

NEC targeting another home victory

For NEC FC, the return to league action presents an opportunity to build on the momentum generated before the international break.

The 4-1 victory over URA demonstrated the attacking potential within Mukasa’s squad, while the return of Ssebwalunyo and Basangwa provides further depth ahead of the encounter.

Express, meanwhile, will be determined to frustrate the hosts and improve on their modest start to the campaign.

With both sides having clear objectives, the Matchday Five encounter promises to be a competitive contest at Lugogo.

For the Diehards, however, the target is straightforward: preserve their unbeaten record, claim maximum points and make their return to the MTN Omondi Stadium under the floodlights a memorable one.
