Uganda Cranes Fight Back to Hold Tunisia to 1-1 Draw
The draw gives Uganda a point from their opening Group H fixture and marks a positive start against one of the group's experienced sides.
TUNIS, TUNISIA — Uganda Cranes began their TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) PAMOJA 2027 qualification campaign with a 1-1 draw against Tunisia on Thursday night, September 24, 2026, at the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in Radès.
The hosts took an early lead through Alaa Arous in the 12th minute after an assist from Khalil Ayari.
Uganda, coached by Paul Put, struggled to find a breakthrough before half-time but remained organised to prevent Tunisia from extending their advantage.
After the break, both sides made changes as the game opened up. Uganda introduced James Bogere for Travis Mutyaba in the 63rd minute, and the Cranes were rewarded five minutes later when Rogers Mato equalised in the 68th minute following a pass from right-back Nathan Asiimwe.
Tunisia responded with further substitutions as they searched for a winner, while Put made changes of his own, bringing on Steven Mukwala for Mato and Allan Oyirwoth for Allan Okello in the 82nd minute.
Hillary Mukundane was introduced for Alhassan Baba in the 90th minute as Uganda strengthened their defensive shape for the closing stages.
The Cranes held firm despite late pressure from the hosts. Sadok Kedida and Uganda's Aziz Kayondo were both booked in added time, but neither side could find a winning goal.

Uganda Already Assured of AFCON Place
Uganda are already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON finals as one of the three co-hosts alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
However, the Cranes are participating in the qualification campaign as CAF determines the additional qualifier from Group H.
The result in Tunis therefore gives Uganda an opportunity to gain competitive match experience ahead of the continental tournament while also competing for a strong position in the group.
Cranes Face Libya in Hoima
Uganda will return home for their second Group H match against Libya on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Hoima City Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00pm EAT.

Libya also began their campaign with a draw, playing out a 2-2 result against Botswana, while Tunisia will face Botswana in their next Group H fixture.
The 2027 AFCON finals will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
For the Cranes, attention now turns to Hoima, where they will seek to build on the point earned in Tunis against Libya.
