Dr. Gerald Obai: Rotary's UGX 2.1 Billion Investment Brings Hope to Mothers and Newborns in Uganda
The equipment was officially flagged off on July 7, 2026, under the "Empowering Families, Growing Futures" grant, an initiative aimed at strengthening maternal and newborn care services and reducing preventable deaths among mothers and infants.
KAMPALA, Uganda – In a significant boost to maternal and newborn healthcare in Uganda, Rotary District 9213 and Mama Toto Care Uganda, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, have flagged off life-saving maternal and newborn medical equipment worth UGX 2.1 billion (approximately USD 551,000) for distribution to 31 health facilities across the country.
The equipment was officially flagged off on July 7, 2026, under the "Empowering Families, Growing Futures" grant, an initiative aimed at strengthening maternal and newborn care services and reducing preventable deaths among mothers and infants.
The donation comes at a critical time when Uganda continues to face challenges in maternal and neonatal healthcare, with many health facilities lacking essential equipment required to provide quality emergency obstetric and newborn services.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Rotary District 9213 Governor, Dr. Gerald Obai, described the occasion as one of the most memorable moments in his service to humanity.
"Some moments stay with you forever. Today was one of them. Watching life-saving maternal and newborn equipment begin its journey to 31 health facilities reminded me why I chose medicine and why I serve in Rotary. Together, we're giving mothers and babies a fighting chance," Dr. Obai said.
He emphasized that the intervention goes beyond donating equipment, noting that it represents hope for thousands of families and a commitment to ensuring that no mother or newborn loses their life due to inadequate healthcare resources.
The equipment is expected to improve the capacity of beneficiary health facilities to handle complications during childbirth, provide specialized care for premature babies and newborns in distress, and enhance the overall quality of maternal healthcare services.
The latest donation follows another major milestone achieved under the same programme in May 2026, when healthcare workers graduated from specialized training in Comprehensive Newborn Care at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.
The training equipped healthcare professionals with advanced skills in newborn resuscitation, management of premature and low-birth-weight babies, infection prevention, and emergency neonatal care. The initiative was designed to ensure that health workers not only receive modern medical equipment but also possess the knowledge and expertise necessary to use it effectively.
Health experts have consistently argued that combining medical equipment with capacity building is one of the most effective strategies for reducing neonatal mortality and improving maternal health outcomes.
Uganda has made notable progress in reducing maternal and child mortality over the years. However, challenges remain, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to specialized maternal and newborn services is still limited.
Through the "Empowering Families, Growing Futures" grant, Rotary District 9213, Mama Toto Care Uganda, and the Ministry of Health are seeking to bridge these gaps by strengthening health systems and ensuring that life-saving interventions reach the communities that need them most.
The 31 beneficiary health facilities are expected to use the equipment to improve maternal and newborn care services, reduce referral delays, and increase survival rates among mothers and newborn babies.
The initiative also demonstrates the growing importance of partnerships between government institutions, civil society organizations, and humanitarian agencies in addressing healthcare challenges and accelerating progress toward achieving national and global health targets.
As the equipment begins its journey to health facilities across Uganda, thousands of mothers and newborns stand to benefit from improved healthcare services, renewed hope, and a greater chance at survival.
For Rotary District 9213 and its partners, the investment is more than a financial contribution—it is an investment in life, healthier families, and a stronger future for Uganda.
