Uganda's Samuel Nabeeta Wins Global Recognition for Sustainable Development Leadership

Ugandan businessman, entrepreneur and renewable energy advocate Samuel Nabeeta Mulowooza has received international recognition in Spain for his contribution to renewable energy development, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, media innovation and youth empowerment.

Nabeeta was honoured with a prestigious Honorary Award during the Clevenard Open Project 2026 – 5th Edition and the Clevenard Global Awards – 3rd Edition, held at the Palacio de Congresos in Alicante, Spain, from August 27 to 30, 2026.

The honorary recognition was formally presented on Sunday, August 30, during the fourth and final day of the international event at the Clevenard Global Awards Ceremony and International Fashion Runway.

The ceremony brought together leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, policymakers, investors, cultural ambassadors and other distinguished personalities from different parts of Africa, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas.

The award recognises Nabeeta's contribution to sustainable development and his work in promoting renewable energy, entrepreneurship, economic transformation, financial inclusion and youth empowerment in Uganda and beyond.

Keynote Address on Africa's Economic Future

Apart from receiving the international honour, Nabeeta was also among the featured keynote speakers at the Global Economy, Trade, Agriculture, Solid Minerals and Investment Summit held on Friday, August 28.

His presentation, titled “Empowering Africa's Future: Renewable Energy, Entrepreneurship and Youth Innovation as Catalysts for Sustainable Economic Transformation,” examined the role of renewable energy, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, skills development and youth-driven innovation in accelerating Africa's economic growth.

Drawing from his experience as both an entrepreneur and development practitioner, Nabeeta argued that Africa's development challenges require practical and systemic solutions that connect communities, businesses, governments and investors.

“I do not come to you today as a theorist. I come as a practitioner who has sat across a table from a community in rural Uganda that had never seen a reliable light source, and who has also sat across a table from sovereign wealth funds in the Gulf deciding where to place the next billion dollars,” Nabeeta told the gathering.

“What I have learned at both those tables is the same: the gap between them is not technical. It is systemic, relational, and political. And it is closeable,” he added.

Nabeeta said Africa possesses enormous entrepreneurial potential, with the continent recording some of the highest levels of entrepreneurial activity globally.

However, he noted that many small and medium-sized enterprises struggle to survive beyond their early years due to persistent structural barriers.

According to him, challenges such as unreliable electricity, expensive financing, unfavourable regulatory environments and inadequate digital infrastructure continue to constrain the growth of small businesses.

“The failure rates are not a consequence of lack of ambition or lack of skill,” he said.

“They are a consequence of structural suffocation: power cuts that destroy inventory, financing costs that run at 20 to 30 per cent in local currency terms where access exists at all, regulatory frameworks designed for large formal enterprises rather than dynamic micro-enterprises, and digital infrastructure gaps that lock small businesses out of the global supply chains they could otherwise serve.”

Call for Practical Renewable Energy Policies

Nabeeta further emphasised that Africa's transition towards renewable energy will require more than commitments and declarations.

He called for practical interventions to make renewable energy investment more attractive and beneficial to African economies.

Among the interventions he proposed were currency risk de-risking mechanisms, harmonised regional regulatory frameworks, and mandatory local ownership and skills-transfer thresholds in renewable energy concessions.

He argued that such measures would help African countries attract investment while ensuring that local communities, businesses and professionals benefit from the continent's growing renewable energy sector.

His message resonated with the broader theme of the Clevenard forum, which focused on strengthening international collaboration, investment, innovation and sustainable development.

Driving Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development

Nabeeta is widely recognised as an entrepreneur and development leader with a strong interest in sustainable economic transformation.

As the Chief Executive Officer of SUNBOX Solar Limited and Eye Power Engineering, he has contributed to efforts aimed at expanding access to renewable energy solutions and engineering services.

Through his leadership, the companies have supported initiatives intended to improve access to sustainable energy while contributing to commercial growth and community development.

His work reflects the growing importance of renewable energy in Uganda and Africa, particularly as countries seek sustainable solutions to energy access, industrialisation and economic development.

Nabeeta's approach combines entrepreneurship with development, focusing on how private sector innovation can address social and economic challenges.

Promoting Financial Inclusion and Economic Dialogue

Beyond renewable energy and engineering, Nabeeta has also established a platform for public engagement on business and economic issues.

He is the driving force behind The Business Class, a flagship media platform operating under Debu & FI Initiatives — Deepening Economy, Business and Financial Inclusion Initiatives.

The platform promotes business education, financial literacy and economic awareness while encouraging dialogue among entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and members of the public.

Through the initiative, Nabeeta has created opportunities for discussions around investment, trade, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and economic transformation.

The platform is part of his broader vision of ensuring that economic knowledge and opportunities are accessible to a wider section of society, particularly young people and emerging entrepreneurs.

Empowering Young People

Through Skills and Innovation Youth empowerment remains one of the central pillars of Nabeeta's development agenda.

He has dedicated significant effort to initiatives aimed at equipping young people with practical skills, entrepreneurship knowledge and opportunities for innovation.

Among the initiatives associated with his youth empowerment work are youth engagement platforms connecting young people with opportunities and stakeholders, as well as Community Baraza systems designed to promote grassroots participation and leadership.

His programmes have also focused on establishing innovation, incubation and entrepreneurship centres where young people can develop ideas and transform them into viable enterprises.

Other areas of intervention include vocational and technical training in carpentry, tailoring, mechanics, agriculture, information and communication technology, and creative industries.

Nabeeta's youth empowerment initiatives also extend to international youth exchange programmes aimed at providing mentorship, entrepreneurship training and global exposure.

The integrated model combines grassroots mobilisation, practical training, innovation incubation and market access, helping young people move from unemployment and dependence towards entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods.

Investing in Africa's Young Population

Nabeeta believes that Africa's rapidly growing youthful population represents one of the continent's greatest strategic assets.

He has consistently advocated for increased investment in education, technical and vocational skills, entrepreneurship, innovation and renewable energy. 

According to his leadership philosophy, these sectors must be treated as interconnected pillars capable of driving long-term economic transformation and reducing poverty.

His work promotes collaboration between governments, private sector institutions, development partners and civil society organisations in building sustainable empowerment ecosystems.

Such partnerships, he argues, are necessary to create opportunities that can have a lasting impact on communities.

As delegates gathered in Alicante from different continents, Nabeeta's participation served as an example of how African entrepreneurs and development practitioners are increasingly contributing to international discussions on investment, technology, sustainability and economic transformation.

The Clevenard Open Project 2026 – 5th Edition was held under the theme: “A Global Celebration of Business, Culture, Creativity and Human Connection.”

The four-day international forum brought together diplomats, government officials, policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs, academics, creatives, media professionals and cultural ambassadors.

The event provided a platform for participants to explore investment opportunities, build international partnerships, promote innovation and strengthen cultural exchange.
