Mubende District was the center of national pride and celebration on 26th January 2025, as Uganda commemorated the 39th NRM Liberation Day. Among the highlights of the event was the recognition of 61 distinguished Ugandans who were honored with medals for their exceptional service to the nation. One of the standout honorees was Hajji Yunus Kakande, the Secretary in the Office of the President, who was awarded the prestigious Distinguished Order of the Nile Medal (Grand Commander) by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Hajji Kakande was among four recipients of this particular medal, a testament to his unwavering dedication and outstanding contributions to Uganda’s development and international diplomacy. The medal recognizes his instrumental role in the successful preparation and hosting of two high-profile international summits: the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and the G77 + China Summit, both held in January 2024.

The NAM Summit, hosted in Kampala, was attended by representatives from 90 of the 120 member states, including 30 heads of state. This was a landmark event in Uganda's history, showcasing the country as a hub for international diplomacy. Shortly after, the G77 + China Summit, held at the prestigious Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo, further elevated Uganda’s status on the global stage.

Hajji Kakande’s leadership and commitment were pivotal in the flawless execution of these events. From coordinating logistical details to ensuring smooth interactions among world leaders, his efforts contributed to Uganda’s ability to successfully host such significant gatherings.

Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, the Minister of the Presidency, congratulated Hajji Kakande for his remarkable achievement. In her statement, she commended him for his unwavering commitment to serving the nation and for his role in elevating Uganda’s image globally. She expressed her gratitude to President Museveni for consistently recognizing and honoring hardworking individuals, which serves as a source of inspiration for all Ugandans.

"Hajji Yunus Kakande's dedication to duty and his contribution to Uganda’s growth and diplomacy deserve this prestigious recognition. His efforts reflect the values of patriotism, excellence, and service to the nation," Hon. Babalanda remarked.

A total of 61 individuals were recognized during the Liberation Day celebrations under eight award categories. These awards honored contributions in various fields, including public service, security, and international relations.

The Distinguished Order of the Nile Medal (Grand Commander): Awarded to four individuals, including Hajji Yunus Kakande.

The Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Commander): Three recipients.

The Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer): Two recipients.

The Distinguished Order of the Nile (Commander): Two recipients.

Rwenzori Star Medal: Five recipients.

Distinguished Service Medal – Police Medal: Two recipients.

Diamond Jubilee Medal: 43 recipients.

Notably, out of the 61 honorees, 18 were women, highlighting the inclusivity of the awards in recognizing contributions from all sectors of society.
