Busia, Uganda — The National Treasurer of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo, has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting youth development through sports. She made the remarks on Sunday while officiating at the closing ceremony of the five-day Uganda Secondary Schools’ Championship for the Bukedi Subregion held at Madibira Primary School in Busia Municipality.

The tournament brought together over 58 schools from across the subregion, with hundreds of students showcasing their athleticism, teamwork, and determination in various sporting disciplines. Busia Secondary School emerged as the overall champion in the boys' category, while Tororo Girls School took home the trophy among the girls. Both schools, along with the first and second runners-up, will represent the Bukedi Subregion at the forthcoming national-level competitions.

In her keynote address, Amb. Nekesa

congratulated all participating students and schools for their commitment and spirit of competition. She emphasized the critical role of sports in the holistic development of young people, particularly in enhancing physical fitness, discipline, and teamwork.

“Sports do not just produce winners on the field, they also build winners in life,” Amb. Nekesa noted.

“Engaging in physical activities helps learners remain active and focused in their studies, while also preparing them mentally and physically for future challenges.”

Amb. Nekesa also used the occasion to underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening the sports sector, particularly through infrastructural development. She revealed that the NRM government plans to establish a minimum of two sports stadiums in every subregion as part of efforts to nurture talent from the grassroots.

“This is not just about winning trophies; it’s about creating a solid foundation for future sportsmen and women,” she said. “We believe every child in Uganda deserves a chance to discover and grow their talent regardless of where they come from.”

The NRM Treasurer further reaffirmed the party's focus on youth empowerment and talent development, stating that sports can serve as a powerful tool for job creation, social cohesion, and national pride.

As the champions celebrated their victory and preparations for the national stage began, Amb. Nekesa called on school administrators, parents, and the private sector to work hand in hand with government in supporting and promoting youth sports initiatives.

The event attracted various local leaders, education officials, and community members, all of whom lauded the government’s continued efforts in promoting sports as a key component of youth development and national transformation.
