President Museveni Arrives in Adjumani to Campaign for NRM Candidate Leku

ADJUMANI: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is also the National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has arrived at Paridi Stadium in Adjumani District to campaign for the party's candidate, James Leku Pilli, ahead of the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election.

President Museveni arrived at the stadium on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, where he was received by senior NRM officials and party leaders from Adjumani and the wider northern region.

The President's campaign visit comes two days before voters in Adjumani West are scheduled to go to the polls on Thursday, September 17, to elect their representative in Parliament.

He was received by the NRM Vice Chairman for the Northern Region, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua; NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong; and senior party officials, including the Director for Mobilisation, Dr Rosemary Nansubuga Sseninde; Director of Finance, Hajjat Medina Naham Ojale; Director of Communications, Hon. Emmanuel Lumala Dombo; and Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi.

Other national, regional and district leaders also joined the reception at Paridi Stadium as the ruling party intensified its mobilisation ahead of Thursday's vote.

The President is expected to use the campaign platform to rally voters behind Leku, who is the NRM flag bearer in the by-election, while outlining the party's development agenda and urging residents to support government programmes aimed at improving household incomes and social-economic transformation.

The Adjumani West seat fell vacant following the death of former area Member of Parliament and veteran politician Gen. Moses Ali on July 18, 2026.

The Electoral Commission subsequently organised the by-election to fill the vacant parliamentary seat, with campaigning attracting candidates from different political formations and independent contenders.

Leku is facing other candidates in a contest that has attracted considerable political attention in the district, with the NRM seeking to retain the constituency through its flag bearer.

The by-election has also witnessed developments within the political landscape, including former independent candidate Ben Anyama calling on his supporters and other voters to back Leku, urging residents to put aside political differences and unite behind the NRM candidate.

President Museveni's presence in Adjumani is therefore expected to give the NRM campaign a major boost as the party makes its final mobilisation efforts before polling day.

The President has consistently used campaign rallies to emphasise the importance of electing leaders who can work with government to promote development, increase household incomes, create employment opportunities and strengthen service delivery.

With only days remaining before the vote, political parties and candidates are expected to intensify their mobilisation activities as they make their final appeal to voters across Adjumani West.

The Electoral Commission has designated polling stations across the constituency where registered voters will cast their ballots on Thursday.

The Adjumani West by-election is being closely watched as an important political contest in the West Nile region, with the outcome expected to determine who will represent the constituency in the 12th Parliament.

The NRM leadership has rallied its structures at national, regional and district levels behind Leku, while urging supporters to remain united and turn up in large numbers on polling day.
