Speaking anonymously from Kampala, several youthful employees praised the company’s strong work culture, organised systems and the sense of stability it offers—factors they attribute to Shukla’s leadership and decades-long commitment to business excellence.
Creating Opportunities for the Next Generation
Shumuk Group, founded in 1984, has over the years provided employment to more than 500,000 Ugandans, according to internal company records. Many of these have been young people entering the workforce for the first time.
One staff member noted that the organisation has given countless youths a start in life:
“We thank Mr. Mukesh for establishing such a good environment that has employed many people including us. Like in any business, we face minor challenges, but we are optimistic management will handle them. Most of us started small, but at least we are somewhere.”
Employees revealed that although they rarely interface with Shukla directly, the policies and workplace systems he has instituted continue to foster professionalism, mentorship and growth. Many said they have been able to earn a living, build careers and gain skills that position them for long-term success.
A Call for Youth Empowerment and Responsible Citizenship
Beyond the workplace, some of the young employees also urged their peers across the country to wisely use the opportunities available to them and avoid being manipulated by political actors.
A 28-year-old employee emphasised the need for young people to stay focused:
“This is the age bracket politicians often use for their goals. Please don’t allow yourselves to be used. Elections come and go, but some of our age mates are still in prison for actions they took just to impress politicians, who themselves face no long-term consequences.”
The youth encouraged their contemporaries—especially those currently in vacation—to seek productive ventures, noting that many in Shumuk Group started with small roles before progressing.
