Hjørring, Denmark – The countdown is on as the vibrant town of Hjørring prepares to host one of the world’s largest and most prestigious youth football tournaments — the Dana Cup 2025. Scheduled to take place from 21st to 26th July 2025, this year’s edition promises to be one for the history books, with an unprecedented number of African teams confirmed to participate, alongside thousands of young players from around the globe.

? Africa Makes History: A Record 53 Teams Set to Compete

In what has been described as a monumental leap for African youth football development, 53 African teams have successfully secured visas to participate in Dana Cup 2025 — a dramatic rise from only 7 teams just two years ago. This exponential growth reflects the Dana Cup’s expanding influence across the continent, thanks in no small part to the tireless efforts of Frank Peterson, the Dana Cup’s Africa Consultant.

From traditional football powerhouses like Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, to first-time entrants from Namibia, Guinea, and Rwanda, the African contingent represents a mosaic of cultures, talents, and football philosophies. These teams will compete with thousands of other youth sides from across the world, fostering global friendships and developing future stars.

63 Pitches, One Passion

Dana Cup is no ordinary tournament. With over 63 pristine pitches, hundreds of referees, and thousands of matches, the entire town of Hjørring transforms into a football utopia. Boys and girls, aged between 12 and 19, will showcase their skills in a festival atmosphere that emphasizes friendship, respect, and international camaraderie.

This year, expectations are high not just on the pitch, but off it as well. The African teams bring with them a wave of cultural vibrancy and unique playing styles, promising a dynamic flavor to the tournament.

?‍⚕️ From the Pharmacy to the Pitch:

Referee Derrick Mensah of Ghana Among the Dana Cup’s match officials this year is Derrick Mensah, a Class 1 referee from Ghana and a pharmacist by profession. His dual identity as a healthcare professional and elite referee underscores the tournament’s rich diversity and the multifaceted lives of those who make the game possible.

Mensah is part of a broader panel of international referees who uphold the spirit of fair play and ensure smooth match officiation. His presence symbolizes Ghana's growing contribution not just in playing talent, but in football governance and integrity.

?️ The Dream Is Global – And It Lives in Hjørring

With many players, coaches, and fans expected to flood into Hjørring, Dana Cup 2025 will be more than a competition — it will be a celebration of global unity through sport. Youth teams will live together, dine together, and compete fiercely, but above all, they will learn from each other, making lifelong memories and building cross-border friendships.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Dana Cup Africa Consultant Frank Peterson remarked:

“What we’re witnessing is the beginning of a new era. African teams are no longer just participants — they’re contenders. And their presence is energizing the entire tournament.”

? Ready to Make History?

The pitches are lush and green, the stadiums are buzzing, and the stage is set for the most unforgettable football week of 2025. As the world turns its attention to Hjørring this July, all eyes will be on the youth who dare to dream, play, and shine.

Dana Cup 2025 isn’t just a tournament — it’s a movement. And this year, Africa is taking center stage.
