Beyond the Lights: Indian Association Uses Diwali Festival to Showcase Its Contribution to Uganda

The Indian community in Uganda has used its annual Diwali Food and Music Festival to renew its commitment to the country's development, highlighting its contributions in healthcare, education, investment and humanitarian work.

The festival, held on Sunday at Speke Resort Munyonyo, attracted government officials, diplomats, business leaders and members of the public, bringing together culture, entertainment and a message of continued partnership between Uganda and India.

Vice President Jessica Alupo, who was the chief guest, commended the Indian community for maintaining strong ties with Uganda and contributing to the country's social and economic progress.

She particularly recognised the Indian Association of Uganda for its humanitarian programmes, including free medical services and support for heart surgeries, which have helped improve access to specialised healthcare for Ugandans.

Alupo pledged government's continued cooperation with the association, emphasising the importance of partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to communities.

Speaking at the event, Indian Association of Uganda Chairman Paresh Mehta said the community's relationship with Uganda was built on generations of shared history and contribution.

"Our story in Uganda is not for a year or a decade. It is for more than 100 years. Our forefathers dedicated their lives to the development of Uganda, and we honour their efforts," Mehta said.

He noted that generations of Indian families had lived, worked and invested in Uganda, appreciating the government and the First Family for maintaining peace and stability.

Mehta reaffirmed the association's commitment to Uganda's development, saying the community remained ready to contribute to the country's progress.

Beyond the celebration

The Indian Association's work extends beyond the annual festivities, with initiatives that include blood donation drives, medical camps, scholarships, school support and humanitarian assistance.

These interventions have helped establish the association as a partner in community development, complementing government efforts in addressing social needs.

The festival also provided an opportunity for guests to experience India's cultural diversity through traditional cuisine, music and entertainment.

Diwali, popularly known as the Festival of Lights, represents the triumph of light over darkness and hope over despair. Its celebration in Uganda has grown into an occasion for cultural exchange, bringing together people from different backgrounds.

The event was also attended by Minister for Kampala Hajjat Minsa Kabanda and the Acting Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, among other guests.

Hosted at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the festival further demonstrated how cultural events can strengthen tourism, promote social interaction and deepen the longstanding relationship between Uganda and India.
