EC Announces Repeat Women’s Committee Elections in Areas Where Polls Were Disrupted

The Electoral Commission has announced that residual and repeat elections for women’s committees will be held today, Friday, July 24, 2026, in areas where voting could not take place during Thursday’s nationwide polls.

Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the women’s committee elections were generally conducted peacefully and in accordance with electoral laws and guidelines issued by the Commission.

He said reports from Electoral Commission officials across the country indicated that women turned up in large numbers to elect their village-level women’s committees.

However, Mucunguzi noted that elections failed to take place in a few isolated areas due to various reasons, including tie votes and chaotic scenes that prompted presiding officers to halt the process to safeguard the integrity of the elections.

He urged women in the affected areas to participate in the repeat elections scheduled for today, saying the exercise is intended to ensure that all women’s committees are constituted across the country.

The completion of the village-level elections will pave the way for the subsequent formation of women’s committees at parish, sub-county, district and national levels.

Mucunguzi thanked candidates, agents, voters, security agencies, Electoral Commission staff, the media, political parties and all other stakeholders who participated in the elections peacefully and adhered to electoral laws.

He also called on Ugandans to build on the positive lessons from the women’s committee elections ahead of the Local Council One (LC1) chairperson elections scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

He urged voters, candidates and other stakeholders to ensure greater enthusiasm and turnout while observing peace, electoral laws and the guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission.
