Imbalu Festival: Government Provides UGX50 Million as Bugisu Leaders Account for Every Shilling

The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, has released UGX50 million to support preparations for the 2026 Imbalu Cultural Festival at the Mutoto Cultural Centre in Mbale City, providing a major boost to activities ahead of this year's official launch.

The financial support was announced by Hon. Alfred Geresom Musamali, the Minister of Information, Media and Communications in the office of the Umukuuka wa Bugisu, who said the funds are intended to facilitate key cultural activities and ensure the successful hosting of one of Uganda's most celebrated traditional ceremonies.

The Imbalu launch, scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026, will take place at the Mutoto Cultural Grounds, the spiritual home of the Bamasaaba cultural institution. The event marks the beginning of the traditional male circumcision season, a revered rite of passage practiced by the Bagisu, Babukusu and other Bamasaaba communities living on the slopes of Mount Elgon across Uganda and Kenya.

The ceremony is expected to attract thousands of cultural enthusiasts, political leaders, diplomats, religious leaders and international guests, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to officiate as the Guest of Honour.

According to Hon. Musamali, a significant portion of the government funding has already been utilized to facilitate the Royal Dinner, which will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Mount Elgon Hotel in Mbale City.

A total of UGX23 million has been paid to various service providers to organize the prestigious dinner, which will bring together invited dignitaries and distinguished guests from Uganda and abroad.

The dinner will also commemorate the third anniversary of the installation of Umukuuka wa Bugisu, His Royal Highness Sir Jude Mike Mudoma, whose reign has been marked by efforts to strengthen cultural unity and promote development across the Bamasaaba community.

Among the high-profile international guests expected to attend the celebrations is His Royal Highness Timothy Yormaadam, the Gbenemene of Ogoniland from Nigeria, whose visit underscores the growing cultural ties between African traditional institutions.

Beyond ceremonial activities, part of the government funding has been directed toward improving infrastructure and operational readiness at the Mutoto Cultural Centre.

Hon. Musamali revealed that outstanding utility bills, including water and electricity, have been cleared to ensure uninterrupted services throughout the festivities. The funds were also used to purchase a UGX2 million ceremonial bull, which will feature prominently during the Imbalu launch celebrations in accordance with Bamasaaba cultural traditions.

In addition, UGX16 million has been allocated to the leadership of Bugisu districts, who were this year entrusted with organizing and coordinating the launch activities in partnership with the Bamasaaba Cultural Institution.

The minister noted that the district leadership has been working closely with cultural officials and organizing committees to ensure that all logistical arrangements are completed ahead of the event.

As preparations intensified, Hon. Musamali also addressed allegations circulating on social media claiming that the government funds had been misappropriated.

He dismissed the reports as false and misleading, emphasizing that the funds have been spent transparently on approved activities directly related to the successful organization of the Imbalu festival.

Umukuuka Sir Jude Mike Mudoma III has also appealed to the Bamasaaba community to disregard misinformation and remain united as they prepare to celebrate one of their most treasured cultural traditions.

He urged the public to rely on official communication from the cultural institution instead of unverified reports circulating on social media.

The government funding comes at a time when preparations for this year's Imbalu festival have reached their peak, with cultural leaders expressing confidence that the event will further promote tourism, preserve the Bamasaaba cultural heritage, and strengthen national unity through cultural diversity.

The Imbalu festival remains one of Uganda's most significant indigenous cultural events, drawing participants and visitors from across East Africa and beyond while showcasing the rich traditions, music, dance and identity of the Bamasaaba people.

Hon. Musamali concluded his communication with the institution's rallying call, "Lwe Liswa ni Bulamu Bweffe" ("Our Culture is Our Life"), reaffirming the cultural institution's commitment to preserving and promoting the heritage of the Bamasaaba for future generations.
