Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki has reported significant progress in ongoing road construction works under the World Bank-funded Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), with the projects reaching an average completion rate of 48 per cent.

Buzeki made the announcement following a follow-up supervision visit to several road construction sites in Kawempe and Central divisions, where she assessed the progress of works aimed at improving mobility, easing traffic pressure and enhancing the quality of the urban environment.

The roads inspected in Kawempe Division included Mukalazi, Muganzi’waza and Nsamba, while the inspection in Central Division covered George Street, Machkinon and Square 1.

According to Buzeki, the latest progress marks a significant improvement from less than five per cent recorded three months ago, signalling an acceleration in the implementation of the road infrastructure projects.

“The works have reached an average of 48%, up from less than 5% three months ago,” Buzeki said, adding that the projects are expected to be completed by December 2026.

The supervision visit forms part of KCCA’s efforts to monitor the implementation of ongoing infrastructure projects, assess progress on the ground and ensure that construction works remain on course to meet the scheduled completion deadline.

Roads expected to ease traffic pressure

Once completed, the roads are expected to provide alternative routes for motorists and other road users, helping to ease pressure on some of Kampala’s main roads and improve movement within the affected neighbourhoods.

Kampala’s growing urban population and increasing number of vehicles have continued to place pressure on the city’s road network, making investment in additional and improved road infrastructure important for reducing congestion and supporting economic activity.

The improvement of neighbourhood roads is also expected to enhance access to homes, businesses and other services, while making daily journeys more convenient for residents.

For traders, commuters and other city users, better road connectivity could help reduce travel difficulties and improve the movement of goods and people across the affected areas.

Focus on mobility and air quality

Beyond improving road connectivity, Buzeki said the projects are expected to contribute to better air quality across Kampala.

Improved road infrastructure can support smoother traffic movement and reduce the time vehicles spend idling in congestion.

These changes can help limit vehicle emissions, although the overall impact on air quality will depend on traffic volumes, vehicle conditions and other environmental factors.

The projects are being implemented under the World Bank-funded GKMA-UDP, which supports urban development and infrastructure improvements in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

KCCA's continued supervision of the works is intended to track construction progress and ensure that the projects deliver the expected benefits to residents and other road users.

With the average completion rate now at 48 per cent, attention will remain on maintaining progress towards the December 2026 deadline.

The successful completion of the six roads would represent an important step in improving local connectivity, reducing pressure on Kampala’s major transport routes and supporting efforts to build a more accessible and efficient capital city.
