LC I Chairperson Solomon Serwanja Secures District Commitments on Roads, Water and Youth Empowerment

Mukono District Chairperson, Hon. Francis Lukooya Mukoome, has assured residents of Bamutakudde Local Council I in Ddundu Parish, Kyampisi Sub-county, of increased government attention to challenges affecting the community, particularly roads, access to clean water, health services, environmental protection and youth empowerment.

Hon. Lukooya made the commitment during a community engagement meeting organised to give residents an opportunity to present their concerns directly to district leaders and seek practical solutions to some of the challenges affecting their daily lives.

The engagement was led by Bamutakudde LCI Chairperson, Hon. Solomon Serwanja, and attended by members of the Mukono District Executive Committee and District Speaker, Hon. Asuman Muwumuza Lubowa.

Residents Raise Key Community Challenges

During the meeting, Hon. Serwanja presented several concerns affecting residents, including inadequate access to clean and safe water, insufficient street lighting and the impact of industrial activities on the surrounding community.

He appealed to the district leadership to intervene and support residents in finding lasting solutions to the challenges.

The concerns surrounding factories also attracted the attention of the District Chairperson, who cautioned industrial proprietors against establishing or expanding factories without adequately engaging the communities in which they operate.

Hon. Lukooya stressed that investors have a responsibility to comply with environmental laws and regulations, including undertaking and presenting Environmental Impact Assessments where required, particularly where industrial activities have the potential to affect residents and the environment.

He said development and investment should benefit communities while also protecting residents from avoidable environmental and social consequences.

Road Rehabilitation Promised

One of the major issues raised by residents was the poor state of the road serving Bamutakudde.

Hon. Lukooya assured residents that the road was already receiving attention, revealing that culverts had arrived and that the district was preparing to undertake improvement works.

He described the development as an important intervention for the community, given the road's role in connecting residents to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.

The Chairperson also explained that Mukono District was working to repair its road-maintenance graders with support from the central government.

He said restoring the functionality of the district's road equipment would enable the local government to improve road maintenance across different communities.

District to Address Water Shortages

Access to clean water was another major concern raised by Bamutakudde residents.

Hon. Lukooya said the district was committed to addressing water shortages once its well-drilling machine becomes operational.

According to the Chairperson, the equipment will enable the district to undertake water interventions in Bamutakudde and other communities facing similar challenges.

He said access to safe and reliable water remains an important component of improving household welfare, public health and community development.

Health Services to Receive Attention

On healthcare, Hon. Lukooya said government plans would strengthen service delivery, including the deployment of additional health workers at Health Centre IIIs.

He also indicated that Bamutakudde could benefit from improved health infrastructure, including consideration of a mini theatre to strengthen the capacity of health services available to residents.

The proposed interventions, he said, are intended to bring essential health services closer to communities and reduce the challenges residents face when seeking medical attention.

Youth Empowerment and Job Opportunities

The district leadership also placed emphasis on creating opportunities for young people to acquire skills, employment and income-generating opportunities.

Hon. Lukooya said the district would introduce greenhouse farming and support young people to engage in beekeeping and other productive activities.

He specifically called upon the Bamutakudde LCI leadership to mobilise and register young people in the area so that they can be connected to employment opportunities through the Job Centre programme.

The Chairperson further assured the youth that the district would support the establishment of an apiary and a greenhouse in the community.

He said the initiatives would provide young people with practical skills while creating opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and household income generation.

Support for Single Mothers

Hon. Lukooya also encouraged single mothers in Bamutakudde to register with relevant local structures.

He said proper registration would enable local leaders to identify beneficiaries and link them to available government programmes and support initiatives.

The call was part of a broader appeal for residents to actively participate in government programmes rather than remaining disconnected from opportunities intended to improve household livelihoods.

Education and Keeping Children in School

The District Chairperson also emphasised the importance of education and urged parents and community leaders to ensure that children remain in school.

He cautioned against denying learners access to government schools and called for cooperation among parents, schools and local leaders to ensure children benefit from government education programmes.

He said keeping children in school remains critical to preparing the next generation with the knowledge and skills needed to participate meaningfully in community and national development.

Praise for Local Leadership

Hon. Lukooya thanked the people of Bamutakudde for electing Hon. Solomon Serwanja as their LCI Chairperson, saying strong grassroots leadership is essential in identifying community challenges and connecting residents with government.

He noted that local council leaders are strategically positioned to understand the needs of their communities and communicate those concerns to higher levels of government.

The engagement therefore provided an important platform for strengthening communication between residents and district authorities.

Residents Asked to Participate in Government Programmes

The district leadership urged residents to take an active role in government programmes and work closely with local leaders to ensure that available opportunities reach intended beneficiaries.

The leaders stressed that government interventions in infrastructure, water, health, education, environmental protection and youth empowerment require cooperation between authorities, residents, investors and community leaders.

For Bamutakudde residents, the meeting offered an opportunity to raise long-standing concerns and receive commitments from the district leadership on some of the community's most pressing priorities.

The commitments on road rehabilitation, water interventions, improved health services, youth employment, greenhouse farming and beekeeping are expected to provide a foundation for further engagement between the community and Mukono District Local Government.

The meeting concluded with a call for residents to remain organised, participate in government programmes and work closely with their local leaders to ensure that the commitments made translate into tangible improvements in the lives of people in Bamutakudde.
