Rt. Hon. Todwong Calls for NRM Unity, Victory in Acholi Grassroots Elections
Todwong made the call on Wednesday while addressing a series of Village Barazas in Purongo Town Council, Nwoya District, as the ruling party intensifies its grassroots mobilisation campaign ahead of the local-level elections.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has called on party supporters in the Acholi Sub-region to unite behind officially endorsed NRM candidates and ensure victory in the forthcoming Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections.
Todwong made the call on Wednesday while addressing a series of Village Barazas in Purongo Town Council, Nwoya District, as the ruling party intensifies its grassroots mobilisation campaign ahead of the local-level elections.
The NRM Secretary General said the upcoming grassroots elections are critical to strengthening the party's structures at the village level, urging supporters to actively participate in the electoral process and rally behind candidates selected and endorsed by the party.
During his engagements, Todwong commended NRM members in the area for embracing consensus and unity in the selection of party flag bearers, describing the approach as essential to maintaining cohesion and maximising the party's chances of victory.
At Koyo Cell in Tangi Ward, Todwong witnessed a consensus reached between party members, the NRM flag bearer and independent aspirants, who agreed to work together in the interest of party unity.
He described the development as a demonstration of the purpose and strength of the Village Barazas, which are intended to bring party members together, resolve disagreements and strengthen support for officially endorsed candidates.
"This is a clear demonstration of the purpose and strength of the Village Barazas—to build consensus, foster cohesion and rally all members behind our party flag bearer, thereby strengthening our chances of victory in the forthcoming elections," Todwong said.
He urged other NRM supporters and aspirants across the region to emulate the spirit of unity demonstrated at Koyo Cell, emphasising that internal cohesion would be crucial to the party's performance in the forthcoming elections.
Todwong later joined residents and party members at Pabit Trading Centre Cell in Kiba Ward for another Village Baraza, where members reaffirmed their support for NRM candidates.
During the engagement, the party's village register was verified as part of efforts to strengthen the accuracy and effectiveness of the NRM's grassroots structures. Members also pledged to remain united and support the party throughout the electoral process.
Earlier, Todwong addressed another Village Baraza in Purongo Town Council, where he encouraged party members to take an active role in the grassroots electoral process.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that NRM candidates emerge victorious in both the Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections, noting that success at the grassroots level would help consolidate the party's presence and organisational strength across the country.
The Secretary General called upon NRM supporters throughout the Acholi Sub-region to put aside differences and rally behind officially endorsed candidates, arguing that unity at the village level would be instrumental in delivering decisive victories for the party.
He further emphasised that the grassroots leadership structures play a significant role in connecting the party with communities and mobilising citizens around the NRM's programmes and priorities.
The Village Barazas form part of the NRM's nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign, which seeks to verify party registers, promote consensus among members, resolve internal disagreements where possible and prepare supporters for the forthcoming Village Women Council and LC I Chairperson elections.
The meetings also provide a platform for party leaders to directly engage with members at the village level, assess the party's preparedness and encourage supporters to maintain unity throughout the electoral process.
With the grassroots polls approaching, the NRM leadership has continued to place emphasis on mobilisation, consensus-building and strengthening party structures from the village level upwards.
For Todwong, the developments witnessed in Purongo Town Council demonstrate the potential of the Village Barazas to bring together party members, reconcile competing interests and create a united force behind NRM candidates as the party seeks to consolidate its grassroots support in Acholi and across Uganda.
