Three Arrested Over Death of Rugby Player Sydney Gongodyo After Mob Action Incident

Police at Kira Road Police Station are holding three suspects in connection with the death of professional rugby player Sydney Gongodyo following an incident that occurred on 5 June 2026 in Kampala.
The suspects have been identified as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet. According to preliminary police investigations, the deceased was allegedly attacked by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.

Police officers reportedly responded swiftly to the scene and rushed Gongodyo to Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening at approximately 7:00 p.m.
The three suspects are currently detained at Kira Road Police Station and are assisting police with ongoing investigations into the matter.
The tragic death of the rugby player has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sporting fraternity, with many expressing grief and calling for justice. Friends, teammates, and supporters have described Gongodyo as a talented and dedicated sportsman whose contribution to rugby will be remembered.
