Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus Donates UGX 25 Million to Support 2026 Imbalu Celebrations

MBALE CITY – The Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting the Bamasaaba cultural heritage by contributing UGX 25 million towards the 2026 Imbalu cultural celebrations scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Mutoto Cultural Grounds in Mbale City.

The donation was officially handed over today by members of the Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus, led by Hon. Emmanuel Biara Wephukulu, the Member of Parliament for Bulambuli County and Parliamentary Whip for the Elgon Zone.

Speaking after the handover, Hon. Biara said the financial contribution demonstrates the caucus' collective support for the Imbalu ceremony, which remains one of Uganda's most celebrated cultural traditions and a symbol of unity and identity among the Bamasaaba people.

"Today, as the Parliamentary Whip for Elgon Zone, I joined the Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus and officially handed over UGX 25 million in support of the Imbalu celebrations scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Mutoto Cultural Grounds in Mbale City," Hon. Biara stated.

He noted that the legislators are committed to ensuring the success of this year's festivities and called upon Bamasaaba from across Uganda and the diaspora to actively participate in the celebrations.

The caucus also expressed excitement over the expected attendance of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is scheduled to officiate as the Guest of Honour during the landmark cultural event.

"We look forward to welcoming H.E. the President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, as the Guest of Honour. We also warmly invite all Bamasaaba, stakeholders, friends, and well-wishers to attend in large numbers as we celebrate this cherished cultural heritage together," Hon. Biara added.

The Imbalu ceremony is a deeply rooted cultural practice among the Bamasaaba, marking the transition of young men into adulthood through traditional circumcision rites. Beyond its cultural significance, the event has evolved into a major tourism and economic attraction, drawing thousands of visitors from within Uganda and abroad.

This year's celebrations are expected to attract government leaders, cultural institutions, development partners, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic community, reflecting the growing national recognition of the ceremony as an important component of Uganda's diverse cultural heritage.

The financial support from the Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus is expected to bolster preparations for the event, including logistical arrangements and cultural activities planned at the historic Mutoto Cultural Grounds.

As anticipation builds ahead of the August 1 celebrations, organizers continue to rally support from both public and private stakeholders to ensure a successful event that showcases the rich traditions, values, and unity of the Bamasaaba community.
