Dr. Shamim Nambasa Warns Besigye’s Life at Risk, Joins UMA Doctors in Urgent Call for Medical Access
Pharmacist and former Makerere University Guild President, Dr. Shamim Nambasa, has raised concerns over the health of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, warning that his continued incarceration without proper medical care could lead to dire consequences.
Speaking during a press conference at Mulago Hospital on Sunday, where she joined other doctors from the Uganda Medical Association (UMA), Dr. Nambasa drew a stark comparison between Besigye’s situation and that of the late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya. She cautioned that failure to grant Besigye immediate access to treatment could lead to a similar fate.
“We saw what happened to Hon. Ssegirinya, who suffered in prison without proper medical attention. We cannot afford to lose another leader due to negligence,” she stated.
The UMA doctors, alongside Dr. Nambasa, emphasized that medical care is a fundamental human right and urged authorities to ensure that Besigye receives the necessary treatment. The opposition figure, known for his relentless fight for democracy, has previously faced harsh prison conditions, raising concerns about his well-being.
With mounting pressure from medical professionals, activists, and political allies, the government is now under scrutiny over its handling of Besigye’s detention. Human rights organizations have also joined the call, warning that delaying medical access could have irreversible consequences.
As calls for action grow louder, all eyes are now on the authorities to see whether they will prioritize Besigye’s health or risk yet another political tragedy.
