Formation of People Power Front Sparks Controversy as NUP Challenges Legality
The political landscape in Uganda witnessed a new development on Thursday with the launch of the People Power Front, a newly registered political party led by counsel Robert Rutaro and his associates.
The event, held at Mestil Hotel, immediately drew widespread public attention and reactions, including a strong response from the National Unity Platform (NUP).
In a statement issued shortly after the launch, NUP’s Secretary General, Mr. David Lewis Rubongoya, Friday at NUP headquarters, condemned the formation of the new party, questioning its legality and accusing its founders of being proxies sponsored by the ruling regime to destabilize the opposition, particularly NUP. “For lack of a better word, those are crooks being positioned and funded by the regime to weaken our movement,” Rubongoya alleged.
In defense of the new party, Mr. Apeku Julius, spokesperson for the People Power Front, dismissed the accusations, asserting that the party was legally registered after a thorough vetting process by the Electoral Commission.
He clarified that there was no existing political entity officially gazetted under the same name, which made it eligible for registration.
Speaking again on Friday at Mestil Hotel, Mr. Apeku reiterated that the People Power Front is not affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and refuted claims of external funding.
He emphasized that while the party currently operates independently, it remains open to future collaboration with any political formation, including the NRM, provided there is alignment on ideology and values.
The emergence of the People Power Front introduces a new player into Uganda’s political space, setting the stage for potential shifts and realignments ahead of upcoming political activities.
