Hon. Amb. Nekesa Urges Busia NRM Leaders to Intensify Sensitisation on Government Poverty Alleviation Programmes

NRM National Treasurer Hon. Ambassador Barbara Nekesa Oundo has urged National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Busia District to intensify efforts to mobilise communities and educate residents about government wealth creation programmes aimed at improving household incomes and reducing poverty.

Nekesa made the remarks on Monday, September 28, 2026, during a meeting with NRM leaders in Busia District, where she emphasised the importance of disseminating information about existing government poverty alleviation initiatives to ensure that more people benefit from them.

She challenged party leaders to move beyond political mobilisation during election periods and take a more active role in educating communities about government programmes and the opportunities available to improve their livelihoods.

"I'm here to let our people know how best we can emphasise the issue of wealth creation by taking advantage of the existing programmes. Poverty alleviation programmes are there," Nekesa said.

She urged NRM leaders to regularly visit district offices, seek information about the available government programmes and establish how much funding has been allocated to them so that they can effectively guide residents seeking to benefit.

Nekesa stressed that access to accurate information was essential for communities to take advantage of government initiatives, noting that many people could miss out on available opportunities simply because they were unaware of their existence.

She particularly called on party leaders to strengthen information dissemination structures, starting from the district level down to sub-counties, parishes and villages.

According to Nekesa, leaders with access to information should ensure that it reaches grassroots communities through established party structures, enabling residents to make informed decisions about wealth creation opportunities.

"Let our officers not only be active during campaigns. Information is power. Those who have enough information should give it to the sub-county leaders, who should pass it on to parish leaders, and the parish leaders should pass it on to village leaders for dissemination," she said.

She observed that communities could not benefit from government funds and poverty alleviation programmes if they were unaware of the resources available or the procedures for accessing them.

"They cannot look for monies that they don't know exist," Nekesa said, underscoring the need for sustained grassroots sensitisation.

Her message comes amid continued government efforts to promote household wealth creation through various poverty alleviation programmes, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), which seeks to move households from subsistence to the money economy.

Nekesa's engagement with Busia NRM leaders highlighted the role of grassroots party structures in bridging the information gap between government programmes and intended beneficiaries.

She called for greater cooperation among party officials at different administrative levels to ensure that information about available opportunities reaches communities and translates into meaningful participation in wealth creation initiatives.
