Huawei Uganda Graduates 851 Market Vendors from Digital Skills Training Under DigiTruck Initiative

Huawei Technologies Uganda has successfully concluded its Digital Skills Training program through the innovative DigiTruck initiative, empowering 851 market vendors with essential digital knowledge.

The graduation ceremony, held on March 12 at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) National Innovation Hub, marked a major milestone in bridging the digital divide in Uganda’s informal sector.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance in collaboration with the National ICT Innovation Hub, MTN Uganda Foundation, Centenary Technology Services (Cente-Tech), and UICT, provided digital skills training to market vendors from Kamwokya Community Centre, Kamwokya Market, Kamwokya Mosque, Kitintale Market, Port Bell Market, and Usafi Market. Among the graduates, 493 (58%) were male, and 358 (42%) were female.

The Huawei DigiTruck initiative, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, leverages a mobile, solar-powered 40ft classroom equipped with cutting-edge technology to provide hands-on digital training in underserved communities.

Since its launch on March 8, 2023, the DigiTruck has trained over 6,000 Ugandans, including youth, women groups, and small business owners, enhancing their digital literacy and economic opportunities.

Speaking at the ceremony, a Huawei Technologies Uganda representative reaffirmed the company’s commitment to digital inclusion. “At Huawei, we believe digital skills are crucial for national development. By equipping Ugandans with relevant digital knowledge, we are fostering innovation and unlocking new economic opportunities,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap.

“When market vendors use technology to grow their businesses, we are witnessing a transformation that directly impacts ordinary Ugandans. This initiative reinforces our government’s commitment to ICT as a key driver of national development,” she stated.

With plans to expand the Digital Skilling Program to Greater Kampala, Eastern, Western, Northern, and Central Uganda, the initiative aims to train an additional 3,000 Ugandans by the end of the year. Huawei Technologies Uganda remains dedicated to supporting the country’s digital agenda, ensuring more citizens acquire the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.

The DigiTruck initiative aligns with Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap and Digital Uganda Vision 2040, positioning the country for greater competitiveness in the global digital economy.

Huawei Technologies Uganda expressed gratitude to all partners involved in making the initiative a success and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Uganda’s digital future.
