Ugandan Students Shine at Global Huawei ICT Competition Finals 2025 in China

Uganda has scored a major victory on the global tech stage as university students proudly represented the nation at the 2024–2025 Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals, held in Shenzhen, China. Competing among the world's brightest young minds, Uganda's teams brought home second-place prizes in both the highly competitive Cloud Track and Innovation categories.

Over 210,000 students and instructors from more than 2,000 universities in over 100 countries took part in this year’s competition, which culminated in a global showdown of 179 teams from 48 countries. Uganda’s finalists came from Gulu University, Muni University, Kabale University, Uganda Martyrs University, and Cavendish University, showcasing the country’s growing strength in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education.

Among the standout performers was the Agrikbot team from Gulu University. Competing in the Innovation Track, the team developed an automated agricultural solution capable of monitoring plant health and predicting crop stress before visible symptoms appear. Leveraging artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and IoT technologies, the system aims to enhance farming efficiency, reduce crop losses, and ensure food security a truly Ugandan solution to a global challenge.

Meanwhile, the Cloud Track tested participants on theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and teamwork through a rigorous 8-hour hands-on experiment. Ugandan students excelled, proving their technical prowess on an international level.

Speaking at a celebratory event, Dr. Kedrace Turyagenda, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports representing the First Lady and Minister of Education, Hon. Janet Museveni  lauded the students' performance as a reflection of Uganda’s growing ICT potential and the government’s efforts to empower youth through digital education.

“Huawei has been a strategic partner in Uganda’s digital journey  from enhancing rural ICT access to offering university students platforms to innovate and grow,” Dr. Turyagenda noted.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Guangzhou, China, H.E. Judyth Nsababera, who awarded medals to the students, praised Huawei’s commitment to nurturing future leaders and innovators. “Our students are returning not just with medals, but with skills, networks, and ideas that can spark transformation back home,” she said.

The Huawei ICT Competition, launched in 2015, is a global platform for students to demonstrate their capabilities, share ideas, and build technical expertise in real-world scenarios. It emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and practical learning essential skills in today's rapidly evolving digital world.

As Uganda’s young tech leaders return home, they bring not only international recognition but also renewed inspiration to tackle local challenges using global tools. Their success marks a milestone in Uganda’s digital journey and signals a bright future for the nation’s ICT landscape.
