LC II Polls Peaceful as Electoral Commission Commends Stakeholders

The Electoral Commission has described Monday’s elections for Local Council II (LC II) chairpersons across Uganda as largely peaceful and orderly, with polling conducted in accordance with electoral laws and guidelines.

Speaking on Monday evening, August 10, 2026, at about 6:00pm, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said reports received from election officials deployed across the country indicated that the exercise had generally proceeded well.

Mucunguzi said the Commission was still receiving detailed reports from its staff in all the 10,718 parishes and wards where the elections were conducted, but the information available by the evening pointed to a largely successful exercise. 

“Reports the Electoral Commission is receiving from its staff across the country indicate that generally the elections for LC II chairpersons conducted today were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the electoral laws, as well as following the guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission,” Mucunguzi said.

He said the Commission would continue compiling reports from all polling areas before issuing a comprehensive assessment of the entire election.

Commission congratulates participants

The Electoral Commission congratulated all stakeholders who participated in Monday’s elections, including candidates who emerged victorious and those who were unsuccessful.

Mucunguzi also commended candidates’ agents and supporters for their participation, as well as Electoral Commission staff, security personnel, the media and other actors who contributed to the conduct of the elections. 

The Commission said the peaceful conduct of the exercise was a result of the cooperation of the different stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

Mucunguzi urged the country to await the Commission’s final report as officials continue receiving and verifying information from the different parishes.

Elections held across 10,718 parishes and wards

The LC II chairperson elections were held across Uganda’s 10,718 parishes and wards, bringing the Local Council electoral process to another stage.

The elections attracted candidates seeking to lead local government structures at parish and ward level, with voters participating in the process according to the procedures established by the Electoral Commission.

According to Mucunguzi, the Commission had by 6:00pm received preliminary reports indicating that the elections had largely followed the prescribed guidelines and relevant electoral laws.

He, however, cautioned that the information available at the time was still preliminary because officials were continuing to submit detailed reports from different parts of the country.

More updates expected

The Electoral Commission said it would provide further information to the public as reports from the 10,718 parishes and wards are received, compiled and assessed.

Mucunguzi said the Commission would only be able to provide a complete picture of the conduct of the elections once all the detailed reports had been submitted.

“We are still receiving full details from all the 10,718 parishes across the country where elections were taking place, and once all those full details have come in, the Electoral Commission will be able to give a full picture of the conduct of the elections,” he said.

He nevertheless described the preliminary outcome as encouraging, saying there was no doubt that the elections had taken place and had generally proceeded well.

Largely peaceful exercise

Mucunguzi said the Commission could already confirm that the elections had been conducted peacefully in most areas and in line with the electoral guidelines.

“We can say now without any fear of contradiction that elections have gone on, they have gone on very well, they have been largely peaceful, they have followed the guidelines of the Electoral Commission and have been conducted in accordance with the relevant electoral laws,” he said.

The statement comes as the Electoral Commission continues to receive reports from its field teams following the conclusion of polling.

The Commission is expected to continue monitoring the post-election situation and compiling information from across the country before releasing a more detailed assessment.

The LC II elections are part of Uganda’s wider Local Council electoral process, which has seen the country conduct elections for different levels of local leadership.

As of Monday evening, the Electoral Commission said there was no final nationwide assessment yet, but maintained that the available reports showed that the LC II chairperson elections had been largely peaceful, orderly and conducted in accordance with the law.

The Commission thanked all candidates, voters, agents, supporters, election officials, security personnel, journalists and other stakeholders for their contribution to the electoral process.
