Rt. Hon. Speaker Arrives as 2026 Imbalu Cultural Ceremony Officially Gets Underway at Mutoto Cultural Grounds

MBALE CITY, Uganda – August 1, 2026 – The 2026 Imbalu Cultural Ceremony has officially commenced at the iconic Mutoto Cultural Grounds in Mbale City following the arrival of the Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, Speaker of Parliament, marking the beginning of one of Uganda's most celebrated cultural events. 

Thousands of people from across the country and the diaspora converged at the historic cultural grounds to witness the grand ceremony, which celebrates the Bamasaaba's centuries-old tradition of Imbalu—a rite of passage that ushers young men into adulthood through traditional male circumcision.

The atmosphere at Mutoto is filled with excitement as cultural troupes entertain guests with traditional music, dance, and performances that showcased the richness and diversity of Bamasaaba heritage. Community members dressed in vibrant traditional attire gathered alongside political, religious, cultural, and civic leaders to celebrate a ceremony that remains central to the identity of the Bamasaaba people.

The arrival of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth  signaled the official opening of the event, which is expected to feature cultural exhibitions, speeches by national and cultural leaders, and traditional rituals highlighting the significance of Imbalu in preserving the customs and values of the Bamasaaba community.

The Imbalu Cultural Ceremony(held in even years)serves not only as a celebration of culture but also as a platform to promote unity, peace, tourism, and socio-economic development within the Bugisu sub-region and Uganda as a whole. The ceremony attracts thousands of visitors from different parts of the country and beyond, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and boosting local businesses through trade, hospitality, and tourism.

For the Bamasaaba, Imbalu represents far more than a cultural ritual. It embodies courage, responsibility, discipline, and the transition into adulthood. Elders continue to pass these values from one generation to another, ensuring that the institution remains relevant while adapting to contemporary society.

As celebrations got underway, messages of unity and cultural pride echoed throughout the grounds. Leaders encouraged the younger generation to embrace their heritage while safeguarding the customs that have defined the Bamasaaba community for centuries.
