Juba, August 21, 2025President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed confidence in the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), commending their dedication and discipline in safeguarding the country’s stability.

On Thursday, President Kiir received a comprehensive briefing from the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Gen. Chol Thon Balok, at the State House in Juba. The report detailed the general security situation across South Sudan, with particular attention to developments along the country’s borders.

According to Gen. Thon, the SSPDF remains fully committed to its constitutional duty of defending South Sudan’s territorial integrity, its people, and their property. He assured the President that despite isolated incidents in some parts of the nation, the overall security situation has remained stable.

“The SSPDF will not waver in its mission to protect the sovereignty of this country and ensure the safety of every citizen,” Gen. Thon emphasized, while outlining the army’s operational readiness and ongoing strategies to address emerging threats.

In his remarks, President Kiir praised the army leadership and rank-and-file for their dedication to maintaining law and order, noting that their discipline and service remain a cornerstone of national peace.

“I commend the commitment of the SSPDF in fulfilling their duty to our people and to the Republic of South Sudan. Your sacrifices and loyalty continue to ensure stability in our nation,” the President said. He further reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for the army in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

The security briefing comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to consolidate peace and stability, particularly in border regions that have recently experienced localized tensions. Analysts view the President’s recognition of the SSPDF’s efforts as both a morale booster for the armed forces and a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to national security.

The government has also called on communities to cooperate with the security forces in fostering peace, as South Sudan continues to implement reforms under the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict.

President Kiir’s message underscores the central role of the SSPDF in safeguarding South Sudan’s progress toward lasting stability and national unity.
