Toyota Rallies PLU to Unite Behind Museveni, NRM Flag Bearers Ahead of 2026 Elections

The National Vice Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Michael Nuwagira, popularly known as Toyota, has called on members of the civic organization and all supporters of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to stand firmly behind President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearers in the run-up to the 2026 General Elections.

Toyota made the remarks during a joint press conference held at the NRM Secretariat on Kyadondo Road in Kampala, where the ruling party and PLU leadership officially came together to streamline campaign efforts in support of President Museveni’s re-election bid.

Flanked by senior party officials including NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko, NRM National Treasurer Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa Oundo and Director for Finance and Administration Hajjat Medina Naham, Toyota emphasized that the survival and continued strength of the NRM depended on unity within its ranks.

“The strength of our party lies in discipline and togetherness. As PLU, we are part of the NRM family. It is our responsibility to ensure that the party continues shining, and this can only be achieved if we rally behind NRM and President Museveni wherever we go,” Toyota said.

The PLU Vice Chairman further urged members to respect party discipline, work collectively, and avoid internal divisions that could undermine their shared cause. He also called on PLU supporters to join in large numbers at Kololo Independence Grounds to celebrate President Museveni’s nomination, while observing guidelines from the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Uganda Police.

The meeting also attracted notable leaders such as Frank Gashumba, PLU Vice Chairman for Central Region, David Kabanda, Member of Parliament for Kasambya County, and PLU Secretary GeneralHon. Michael Mawanda, who doubles as Director in charge of Mobilisation.

NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong reiterated the call for mass mobilisation, urging Ugandans to attend the nomination ceremony and demonstrate their support for President Museveni.

“We must show the country and the world that NRM remains strong, united, and ready to continue leading Uganda. Let us all turn up in big numbers at Kololo to celebrate this historic moment,” Todwong said.

Following internal party processes, the NRM endorsed President Museveni as its flag bearer, and he was subsequently cleared by the national Electoral Commission to contest in the presidential elections scheduled for early 2026. His official nomination is slated for September 23, 2025, at Kololo Independence Grounds.

The joint show of solidarity between the ruling party and PLU signals a coordinated campaign strategy, with both groups committed to ensuring President Museveni secures another term in office, while also consolidating support for all NRM candidates at different levels.
