Uganda’s First Biosciences Park Launched in Nakasongola Expects to Save 5bn USD on Annual Importation of Drugs

Uganda's Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja has officially launched the construction of Uganda’s first ever biosciences park at Kakooge, Nakasongola.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Thursday, marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s pursuit of scientific research, biotechnology, and innovation.

The park, expected to transform Uganda into a regional biotechnology hub, is being spearheaded by the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).

Lt. Gen. James Mugira, NEC’s Managing Director, assured the public of the company’s commitment to delivering on the project, citing previous successful ventures.

Lt. Gen. Mugira,  revealed that the UPDF had donated a 50-acre piece of land for the development, which was previously occupied by a military barracks that has since been relocated to Kaweweta.

Addressimg the audience, the Prime Minister,  Nabbanja emphasized the park, besides saving approximately 5bn USD on importation of drugs, it also has the potential to create jobs, drive scientific research, and boost Uganda’s economy.

"This facility will provide Ugandans, especially researchers and innovators, with opportunities to explore biotechnology solutions that can address various challenges in health, agriculture, and industry," she stated.

The park will also feature botanical gardens showcasing Uganda’s rich biodiversity. These gardens will serve as a vital resource for research and innovation, with scientists expected to leverage indigenous plant species for scientific advancements.

Among the key facilities planned is a nuclear research center, positioning Nakasongola as a critical player in biotech research and development.

Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, noted the struggles faced in securing land for the project.

"We needed a dedicated space for biotech manufacturing because we have been working in scattered laboratories. This park will consolidate our efforts and enable large-scale scientific production," she explained.

Local residents and Ugandans at large have been urged to support the project, as it is expected to drive socio-economic transformation through research-driven innovations. The biosciences park is a major step toward making Uganda a leader in biotechnology and scientific advancements in the region.

Construction of the park is set to begin immediately, with stakeholders optimistic about its long-term impact on Uganda’s scientific and economic landscape.

The park shall be saving up to 5 billion USD on importation of drugs, said the prime Minister.

The Speaker of Nakasongola District Council, Rogers Bwanga Sande, has urged the government to prioritize local residents in employment opportunities for the development and construction of the upcoming Bioscience Park.

Speaking to the media during the launch , Bwanga emphasized that engineers, doctors, and other professionals from Nakasongola should be given first consideration before recruiting from outside the district.

He argued that this approach would enhance local economic growth, reduce unemployment, and ensure community involvement in the project.

“We have skilled people within our district who deserve a chance to contribute to this transformative project. Prioritizing local talent will create a sense of ownership and directly improve livelihoods,” Bwanga stated.

The Bioscience Park, expected to be a key hub for scientific research and innovation, is anticipated to boost employment and attract investment to the region.

The Speaker also called on the government and project stakeholders to implement clear policies that ensure fair and inclusive hiring processes.
