Uganda and Algeria to Strengthen Defence Industries Cooperation

The National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Algeria in the field of defence industries. This was highlighted during a visit by a delegation from the High Military School of Algeria to NEC Headquarters in Bugolobi.

The delegation, led by Brig Gen Banhamouda Rabah, included students and faculty members undertaking a study tour in Uganda. The one-week visit aims to explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration in defence industries, an area of growing strategic interest for both nations.

Welcoming the delegation, Lt Gen James Mugira, the Managing Director of NEC, emphasized the long-standing relationship between Uganda and Algeria. He referred to Algeria as the “Land of Martyrs and Freedom Fighters,” commending its people for their historical resistance against colonialism and their significant contributions to peace and liberation in Africa.

Gen Mugira provided an in-depth briefing on NEC’s contributions to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation, highlighting the corporation’s pivotal role in national development. He underscored that defence industries are critical not only for national security but also for economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement.

“Local defence industries are essential for self-reliance and sustainability. They enable countries to supply their armed forces during combat and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers,” Gen Mugira stated.

He further outlined NEC’s multifaceted contributions, which include:

Infrastructure Development: NEC has been instrumental in the construction of critical infrastructure, supporting Uganda’s military and civilian sectors.

Job Creation: The corporation provides employment opportunities for thousands of Ugandans, particularly in the areas of manufacturing and engineering.

Revenue Generation: NEC’s operations contribute significantly to Uganda’s economy through taxes and other revenues.

Import Substitution: By producing essential defence and industrial equipment locally, Uganda reduces its dependency on imports, saving foreign exchange and boosting local industry.

Gen Mugira also highlighted NEC’s commitment to technological advancement and skills development, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for industrial innovation in Uganda.

In response, Brig Gen Banhamouda Rabah expressed his appreciation for the insightful presentation by Gen Mugira. He noted that the delegation had gained valuable knowledge about Uganda’s defence industries and the broader role of NEC in national development.

Brig Gen Rabah emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration between Algeria and Uganda, noting that both nations could benefit from sharing expertise, resources, and best practices in defence production. He also extended an invitation to Gen Mugira to visit Algeria, a move aimed at further solidifying the growing ties between the two countries.

“Mutual support and partnership in the defence industry will enhance our capacities and ensure our nations are better prepared for the challenges of modern security,” Brig Gen Rabah remarked.

The engagement was attended by several senior officials, including:

Maj Gen Innocent Oula – Deputy Managing Director of NEC

Eng Brian Buhanda – General Manager, NEC Construction Works and Engineering Ltd

Ms. Sheila Temia – Business Development Manager, NEC

Ms. Kash Akantorana – Litigation Manager, NEC

The visit marks a significant step in Uganda-Algeria defence cooperation, paving the way for increased collaboration in military technology, training, and industrial capacity building. With both nations seeking to enhance their self-reliance in defence production, the partnership is expected to drive economic growth and innovation within the sector.

As NEC continues to position itself as a leader in Uganda’s industrial transformation, partnerships such as this with Algeria’s military institutions will be crucial in advancing national security objectives while promoting technological and economic progress.
