The Uganda Water and Environment Week (UWEWK) 2025 will feature an extraordinary awareness walk, led by Geoffrey Ayeni,

covering multiple districts from March 3rd to March 14th, 2025. The walkers will be flagged off in Buliisa District and will journey across various towns and districts to promote water conservation, environmental protection, and climate change awareness.

Objectives of the Walk

The walk aims to:

Raise Awareness – Highlight issues related to water resource management, environmental conservation, and climate change.

Community Engagement – Interact with local communities through dialogues, clean-up exercises, and tree-planting activities.

Policy Advocacy – Engage stakeholders in discussions about sustainable water and environment policies.

Corporate and Institutional Partnerships – Involve private sector players like TotalEnergies (U) Ltd, local governments, and learning institutions.

Route and Key Activities

Day 1 – March 3rd, 2025: Buliisa District

Activities: Press conference, clean-up exercise, ceremonial tree planting, and the official flag-off.

Key Participants: Local government leaders, environmental officers, TotalEnergies representatives, and community members.

Day 2 – March 4th, 2025: Butiaba Landing Site

Activities: Dialogue on water conservation, clean-up exercises, and awareness campaigns.

Evening Event: Radio talk show in Biiso Town Council.

Day 3 – March 5th, 2025: Biiso Town Council

Activities: Community engagement, clean-up exercises, and a ceremonial tree planting event.

Day 4 – March 6th, 2025: Nyabyeya Forestry College & Kinyara Sugar Works

Activities: A tour of Nyabyeya Forestry College’s nursery bed, press conference, and documentation of Kinyara Sugar Works’ environmental best practices.

Day 5 – March 7th, 2025: Masindi District Local Government

Activities: Dialogue with students on climate change, Jum’ah prayer with the Muslim community, and a tree-planting exercise.

Day 6 – March 8th, 2025: Kafu & Migeera Town Council

Special Event: Women’s Day celebration combined with environmental awareness activities.

Other Activities: Community clean-up, wetland restoration, and a tree-planting exercise.

Day 7 – March 9th, 2025:

Rest Day & Church Service Event: Church service and community prayer, followed by a ceremonial tree-planting exercise.

Day 8 – March 10th, 2025: Nakasongola District

Activities: Clean-up exercise, awareness sessions, and tree-planting activities.

Day 9 – March 11th, 2025: Luwero District & Kasana-Luwero Diocese

Activities: Dialogue at the district headquarters and tree planting with Kasana-Luwero Diocese.

Day 10 – March 12th, 2025: Bombo Town Council & UPDF Engagement

Key Highlight: A dialogue session with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on environmental conservation and national security.

Day 11 – March 13th, 2025: Wakiso & Kawempe Division

Activities: Community clean-up drives and dialogues at Matugga Town Council and Kawempe Division Offices.

Day 12 – March 14th, 2025: Final Events in Kampala

Venues: Parliament of Uganda, Uganda Management Institute (UMI), Makerere University Business School (MUBS), and Ministry of Water and Environment headquarters.

Key Highlight: Presentation of findings to Parliament and the Ministry of Water and Environment, aiming for policy formulation and action on climate change.

Expected Impact

Increased Public Awareness: Communities along the route will be educated on environmental sustainability.

Policy Influence: Findings will be submitted to policymakers for integration into national development plans.

Community Participation: Schools, religious institutions, and local governments will actively engage in discussions and activities.

The Uganda Water and Environment Week 2025 walk is a crucial initiative in promoting sustainable environmental management and water conservation. As the walkers traverse different regions, they will leave behind a legacy of environmental consciousness, cleaner communities, and strengthened partnerships for sustainable development.

The 8th Uganda Water and Environment Week (UWEWK 2025) is set to take place from Monday, March 17th to Friday, March 21st, 2025. This annual event is organized by the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) through the Water Resources Institute (WRI) and serves as a premier platform for discussing key environmental challenges and opportunities. Themed “Water and environment resources for enhanced resilience and improved incomes and livelihoods,” UWEWK 2025 aims to bring together policymakers, researchers, development partners, and local communities to explore strategies for sustainable water and environmental management.
