Uganda Water & Environment Week 2025: Enhancing Resilience and Livelihoods

The 8th Uganda Water and Environment Week (UWEWK 2025) is set to take place from Monday, March 17th to Friday, March 21st, 2025. This annual event is organized by the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) through the Water Resources Institute (WRI) and serves as a premier platform for discussing key environmental challenges and opportunities.

Themed “Water and environment resources for enhanced resilience and improved incomes and livelihoods,” UWEWK 2025 aims to bring together policymakers, researchers, development partners, and local communities to explore strategies for sustainable water and environmental management.

UWEWK provides an opportunity to:

Foster dialogue on sustainable resource management Showcase innovative solutions for water and environmental conservation Encourage policy-driven actions for improved resilience and livelihoods Strengthen partnerships among government, private sector, civil society, and local communities

Key Themes and Sub-Themes

The 2025 edition of UWEWK will focus on four key sub-themes:

Water and Environment for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future

Examining the link between sustainable environmental management and national security

Addressing water-related conflicts in Uganda and East Africa Strengthening governance structures for water resource management 

Water and Environment for Climate Action

Promoting climate-smart water and sanitation systems

Addressing the impact of climate change on Uganda’s water resources Strengthening Uganda’s resilience to climate-related disasters

Equitable and Sustainable Use of Water and Environment Resources for Improved Incomes and Livelihoods 

Enhancing water access for agriculture, industry, and domestic use

Promoting community-driven conservation initiatives

Exploring opportunities for green jobs and economic empowerment

Water and Environment Innovations, Knowledge, and Capacity for Empowering a New Generation

Encouraging youth participation in environmental conservation

Showcasing new technologies in water and waste management

Strengthening capacity-building programs for professionals and local communities

Planned Activities for UWEWK 2025

The week-long event will feature a series of activities designed to promote knowledge-sharing, stakeholder engagement, and community participation:

Pre-Event Activities (March 3rd–14th, 2025)

✔ Regional Mini-UWEWK –

Engagements across different parts of Uganda to ensure inclusivity

✔ Walk for Water, Environment, and Climate Change Awareness – A nationwide campaign promoting sustainability(3rd-14th March 2025)

✔ Write Shop (February 17th–18th, 2025)

– A preparatory workshop for refining key research papers and presentations

✔ Clean-up, Tree Planting, and Restoration (March 14th, 2025)

–Environmental conservation activities involving schools, local communities, and organizations

Main Event Activities (March 17th–21st, 2025)

During the core event week, UWEWK 2025 will feature:

High-Level Dialogues – Policymakers, experts, and stakeholders discuss pressing environmental issues

Paper Presentations – Researchers share insights and recommendations on sustainable water and environment management

Exhibitions – Showcasing innovative technologies, projects, and best practices

Applied Trainings – Capacity-building sessions on water conservation, waste management, and climate adaptation

Field Visits – On-site learning opportunities in key water and environmental project areas

Youth Debates – Engaging young leaders in discussions on Uganda’s water and environmental future Side

Events & Awards – Recognizing excellence in environmental conservation and advocacy

UWEWK 2025 is open to all interested participants, including government officials, researchers, students, NGOs, private sector representatives, and community members.

Abstracts (maximum 300 words) should align with the conference theme and sub-themes. Deadline for submission was February 2nd, 2025
