Ugandan Activists Call for Peace in Ukraine as War Enters Third Year

Today marks three years since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, a war that has led to immense human suffering and global instability.

Across the world, human rights activists and peace organizations have renewed their calls for an end to the conflict, with the Ukraine Solidarity Committee Uganda among the voices demanding Russia’s withdrawal through dialogue and negotiation.

Led by its patron, Alenyo George William, the Uganda-based pressure group has been at the forefront of advocating for peace in Ukraine.

In a press release issued today, Alenyo emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions, stating that "no deal, discussion, or dialogue should be made over Ukraine without Ukraine."

He further called on international bodies, including the African Union, European Union, United Nations, and the UN Security Council's five veto power members USA, UK, France, Russia, and China to intensify efforts to end the war.

The Ukraine Solidarity Committee Uganda has also announced its intention to lead an African delegation to meet U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss Africa's position on global conflicts, including the ongoing war in Ukraine. The group reaffirmed Africa’s support for initiatives aimed at ending all wars, aligning with President Trump's calls for global peace and security.

With the war continuing to impact not just Ukraine but global economies including Africa’s activists argue that a peaceful resolution is long overdue.

Alex Makanga Kuuku, a key figure in Uganda’s solidarity efforts, has been vocal about Russia’s need to withdraw, advocating for negotiations as the only viable path to peace.

As the world marks three years of war, the message from Uganda is clear: the people of Ukraine deserve their sovereignty, and peace must be prioritized through inclusive dialogue.

The African delegation's upcoming engagement with the U.S. administration could play a crucial role in shaping global diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the conflict.
