Three Arrested by NFA Over Mabira Forest Destruction

The National Forestry Authority (NFA) has arrested three individuals linked to the illegal destruction of Mabira Forest in Buikwe District. The suspects include Joseph Ecima, a Forest Supervisor, along with patrolmen Mwebaze David (also known as Abdul) and Matsiko Winston.

On Wednesday, their arrest follows reports that some NFA officials were colluding with industrial players and prison officials to cut trees for timber, charcoal, and firewood. It was also discovered that sections of the forest were being illegally leased for farming.

In response, Acting NFA Executive Director Stuart Maniraguha launched an investigation that led to the arrests. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Francis Olugu confirmed that the suspects are facing charges of criminal neglect of duty. Additional charges under Uganda’s forestry and anti corruption laws are being considered.

NFA Communications Manager Aldon Walukamba reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting forests. He urged the public to report illegal activities via the NFA’s toll-free line at 0800264036.

Recent crackdowns have resulted in 68 arrests inside Mabira Forest, with 40 suspects already taken to court. Authorities have also impounded 29 vehicles, 100 motorcycles, and 60 power saws used for illegal logging. Meanwhile, the NFA is working with the Ministry of Lands to cancel 112 illegal land titles within Central Forest Reserves, with 700 more under review.

Mabira Forest, covering nearly 30,000 hectares, plays a critical role in climate regulation, water conservation, and air purification. It supports key water bodies such as Lake Victoria and the Nile River system. The forest also provides opportunities for eco-tourism, research, and community-based conservation initiatives.

The NFA has vowed to hold all violators accountable and intensify efforts to restore Uganda’s forests.
