Uganda Hosts 22nd AfWASA Congress: A Vision for Water and Sanitation Sustainability
Welcoming delegates on behalf of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, NWSC Managing Director and President of AfWASA, expressed gratitude to His Excellency the President of Uganda, represented at the opening ceremony by the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister.
Kampala, Uganda – The 22nd African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA) International Congress and Exhibition has officially commenced at Speke Resort, Munyonyo, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, and experts in the water and sanitation sector. Under the theme "Water and Sanitation for All: A Secure Future for Africa," the congress aims to address the critical challenges and opportunities in the continent’s water management sector.
A Landmark Event for Uganda
This marks the third time Uganda has hosted the prestigious congress, a recognition of the country’s commitment to improving water and sanitation access. Welcoming delegates on behalf of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, NWSC Managing Director and President of AfWASA, expressed gratitude to His Excellency the President of Uganda, represented at the opening ceremony by the 3rd Deputy Prime Minister.
Dr. Mugisha underscored Uganda’s significant progress in water service delivery, highlighting that NWSC has expanded its coverage from 4.5 million people in 2012 to 19 million in 2024, with an ambitious target of reaching 26 million by 2030. Uganda’s water network has also witnessed remarkable growth, increasing from 650 km in 2012 to an extensive 23,500 km in 2024, demonstrating the impact of government support and strategic planning.
Key Areas of Focus at AfWASA 2025
With over 80 sessions planned, the congress will tackle six key thematic areas:
✅ Integrated Water Resources Management – Strategies to sustainably manage Africa’s water resources amid climate change and rapid urbanization.
✅ Water & Sanitation Management – Enhancing service delivery, efficiency, and innovation in water distribution and sanitation services.
✅ Capacity Development, Communication & Partnerships – Strengthening workforce skills, stakeholder engagement, and collaborations.
✅ Governance & Financing – Addressing financial challenges and policy frameworks essential for sustainable water projects.
✅ Research, Technology & Innovation – Showcasing cutting-edge solutions to improve water access and sanitation infrastructure.
Showcasing Modern Innovations
The congress also features a massive exhibition where innovators and industry leaders are presenting modern technologies that can drive Africa closer to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) – ensuring clean water and sanitation for all.
Dr. Mugisha emphasized AfWASA’s role in leadership development, partnerships, and capacity building, commending initiatives such as the newly established African Water & Sanitation Academy (AWASA). He called for strengthened collaboration to bridge Africa’s water access gap, urging governments, development partners, and private sector stakeholders to invest in water infrastructure and service expansion.
Uganda’s Water Sector Achievements and Future Plans
NWSC has significantly expanded its footprint, increasing the number of served towns from 23 in 2012 to 276 in 2024, with a projected expansion to 360 towns by 2030. This impressive growth highlights Uganda’s commitment to improving access to safe water and sanitation services across urban and rural areas.
Dr. Mugisha recognized the contributions of the Congress Programme & Local Organizing Committees, led by Eng. Johnson Amayo and Dr. Rose Kaggwa, for their dedication in ensuring a successful event. He encouraged all delegates to engage in meaningful discussions while enjoying Uganda’s renowned hospitality.
