The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), initially scheduled for 2024 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025. This decision was revealed through a media release dated January 14, 2025, citing the need for additional time to ensure readiness of infrastructure and facilities required for the successful hosting of the event.

Progress Achieved but More Time Needed Significant advancements have been made by the co-hosting nations, particularly in upgrading stadiums, training fields, hotels, and other essential facilities. However, CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts, who have been actively assessing the state of preparedness in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, recommended the postponement to allow these countries to meet the high standards required for hosting CHAN.

TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) was initially slated for February 1 to February 28, 2025.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, expressed gratitude to the Presidents of the three nations—William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda—for their leadership and commitment to the event. He commended the impressive efforts made so far in improving football infrastructure across the three countries.

"I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (‘CHAN’) in August 2025," Motsepe noted.

Despite the postponement, the Draw for CHAN 2024 will take place as planned on January 15, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, at 8:00 PM Nairobi Time. This marks a crucial milestone in the preparations for the tournament, keeping the momentum alive for teams and stakeholders involved.

The decision to postpone reflects CAF's commitment to ensuring a world-class event that meets its stringent standards. The move is expected to give Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda ample time to finalize ongoing construction and renovations. CAF has yet to announce the exact date for the tournament's commencement in August 2025, promising to provide updates in due course.

A Boost for Regional Football Development

This postponement could turn into an opportunity for East Africa, allowing the co-hosting nations to showcase a well-organized tournament that could leave a lasting legacy for football development in the region. With additional time, stakeholders can work towards enhancing not only the infrastructure but also the overall experience for players, officials, and fans.

As preparations continue, CAF's collaboration with the host nations will remain pivotal in ensuring the success of the postponed championship, fostering a sense of unity and celebration of African football.
